River Names

Does anyone know of POIs that show UK river names for Navigator 6?

I don't know what you are hoping to achieve with this.

It's not possible to name a river by adding a POI.

The POI is simply a Point that you can navigate to. You could store a POI for "River Humber" but which point on the river would you pick? What would you use it for?

Yes you are right there POI is not the correct thing use - I was just wondering if any information was available to name rivers as you pass over them (not all rivers have signs )

I was thinking about this after reading this thread and came to the same conclusion as pcaouolte, however i then came to the same conculsion as SteveOsl, where you could have a POI and an icon where a road crosses a river.

I can't find any at the minute....

Yes you could have a POI and an icon where the road crosses a river but the icon in Navigator 6 will just be a picture. Nav 6 won't display the name of the POI when you drive past it.

I haven't taken much notice of this recently, but I assumed that rivers WERE named.

This assumption goes back many years to the early GPS systems, when I distinctly remember the River Cherwell being named where it passes under the M40 because it loops back and you actually cross over it twice as you drive along the M40.

I'll have a closer look, but I'd just assumed that because they were once there, river names would still be displayed

Have just done a map browse on my TT710, chose the M4 going over the river Severn - because it was big and easy to find.
The river is not named that I can see, just a lot of blue.



I think the river names would be a good idea as well thinking about it.

Well, I remember reading in the paper that someone with a clip board walked round a city centre and found out that one man in six was gay. Now, if someone could find the time to carry out such a fruitless (and dangerous) task like that then surly there must be someone who can find the time to tackle this river mission.

Yes, I suppose there is. But there are folk about that would disagree. After all, one can often see grown men standing at the end of the platform, anoraks on, notebooks at the ready and video cameras glued to their eye waiting for the seven thirty five from Milton Keynes. Now they are the kind of people that would find mapping rivers positively exciting.

Putting POI files together where the roads cross specific rivers is easy and doesn't take much time, although to do the entire lot would take some considerable effort.
The big problem is that to get the device (TomTom) to read out the name of the river as you cross it on a road would require a single POI category per river, I am sure there are more rivers in the UK than custom POI categories available on a TomTom.

To check out if this would work I used OS mapping online via This web utility to place waypoints at each road crossing on the river Wyre in Lancashire, the GPX file was then converted to Garmin format (csv) using GPS Babel before converting to the required ov2 format using POI Edit - for some strange reason I had to use the intermediate step to convert from the GPX to csv to ov2 in order to get this working, but not all GPX files are created in quite the same way.
With the ov2 file installed to the x20/ x30 I simply set up the device to Warn When near River Wyre POI and to use the "Brief spoken warning" which reads out the name of the POI file whenever you get close to a river crossing.

I have little intention of mapping hundreds of POI locations by river name, but I will send what I have done so far to the site for possible inclusion in the POI download files available from the web site. Its not difficult and if a few people map out the areas close to where they live the POI collection will grow, but whether you can make full use of such a POI collection is doubtful due to the limitations on numbers of custom POI categories.
