I have bought a replacement GTM 21 cable from Amazon.co.uk and have connected it to the cradle but my Nuvi 660FM fails to see any UK subscription.

Is the subscription info held in the unit or in the cable?

How can I restore my lifetime UK TMC subscription?

What's the history here? Did the old one fail?

The subscription is specific to the GTM21 unit itself not the Nuvi.

The bit of string with the 2 suckers came apart from the plastic connector where it joins the charger lead.

Hmm. I had awful problems after getting a GTM 10 from an Amazon seller. After many too'ing and fro'ings with Garmin it turned out the seller had sold me a Kenwood unit intended for the Belgian market despite advertising it as a Garmin for the UK market. To their credit Garmin eventually supplied new subscription codes free of charge but it took a lot of time. My advice is if it doesn't work return it whence it came and get a refund. Did you discuss the failure of the original unit with Garmin? They have been known to be quite sympathetic in similar circumstances.
