My brand new Nuvi 250W - Help!

I only bought this today. It worked on the way home from the shop beautifully. As soon as I got it home I connected it to my PC and ran the webupdater and updated the firmware and British text (the 2 things that had updates available). Then I made a backup copy of all the files and folders on the 250W to an external hard drive. I then copied a few new car icons into the vehicles folder.

Now when I turn on the sat nav and press 'where to' it asks me 'what state or province'???! I cannot find any option to enter a postcode anymore. I then tried it in the car and it just kept saying 'recalculating' over and over and over.
What has happened? Any ideas? Thanks in advance for any help.

Panic over! I did a factory reset and it's fine now. Will my firmare update still be intact now that it's been reset??
