Great price - ebuyer

Spent many an hour searching this and other websites to decide what GPS kit to buy for my ipaq 3970. I was about to place an order when a thread in this forum mentioned ebuyer, which had not been picked up by any search engine.

A quick check and, hey presto, TT3 BT plus a 256Mb SD card at £203.26 incl vat and delivery. An instant saving of about £30 from other best prices.

Arrived 3 days later, AOK. Thumbs Up

Just as a matter of interest, which of their range of SD cards did you choose, and what are the markings on the back of the card?

I'm interested to see if we can identify a reasonably priced non-Sandisk option, as eBuyer UK have now stopped stocking SimpleTech SD cards, sadly.

I have brought a couple of Lexar SD cards in the last 2 months 256Mb and 512Mb from http://www.mymemory.uk.com very good prices for the 512Mb £84

I spent a lot of time researching the various options as I initially brought a Kingston card for my Orange SPV E200 and the phone would not recognise the card at all, SPV's are very sensitive apparently to the make of card.

I then found out that Lexar cards are supposed to be good in the SPV's and sure enough it works a treat, I have since got another for my IPAQ4150 and they both work fine in both devices.

I did some bench make tests on the card in a card reader and the Kingston was appalling on performance compared to the Lexars.

I have noticed that the markings on both my lexar cards is completely different. one says made in USA and the other in Taiwan, so I guess most manufacturers must source there stock from all over the world and don't necessarily manufacture the cards themselves.

If there's a code on the back of the card that's two letters, four numbers and two letters (or two letters and four numbers) the card is almost certainly Sandisk.

It's usually Sandisk cards (which a lot of brands, including sometimes Lexar, relabel) that cause problems - no matter what the hardware is that you're trying to use with the card.

You're the second person to mention this type of marking recently, and I'm afraid they're not a type I recognise.

They do not seem to refer to Sandisk cards - all the known Sandisk codes are of the type I mentioned earlier, two letters, four numbers and usually two further letters. Sandisk cards are usually made in the Far East somewhere - but you finding a 'Made in the USA' card with this type of code hints it's not Sandisk - especially as it seems to work!

In fact, it looks like there's two similar but not identical code families there.

The most important thing is that they're cards that work, it seems. Thanks for the information.

Hi,

Been waiting for ebuyer to get some more Lexar SD cards in and bought two 128's and a 256 this last week, when they did so, at £19.96 and £33.90 each respectively including postage.

On receipt, I noticed that the cards were MADE IN USA, which I guess is unusual so decided to run a few tests on them to compare them to others I use. I found them to be almost identical in speed and performance with TTN3 as the Panasonic 256mb that I have. So far, i've had no lockups or freezes. Seem to be as well made as the Panasonic also.

Two of the cards were for a neighbour and I do not still have them but my 128 is marked as follows:

LEXAR MEDIA
SD128-100v
1204245
A041103A
MADE IN USA

Early signs are that these are excellent cards at a good price and well worth a look. I hope to have a new BT unit next week so will let you know how I and my neighbour get on.

I have three 256 and one 512 SD cards from ebuyer. 2 were bought as Viking and two were bought as ebuyer specials but Viking is what they sent. I use them in a medion ppc250 pda and a Pentax S4 Laughing

camera. None of them has caused a moments problem. The prices have been astoundingly good too! Laughing

Had my USA made Lexar SD card a couple of weeks now and it's early promise has not been fulfilled. Using my new BT receiver, I have experienced freezes with it after about 10 miles on any trip, even when the journey has begun with a soft reset.

On reverting to my Panasonic SD card or Kingston CF card, performance with the 2210 and BT receiver has been faultless. The Lexar card works okay with my CF receiver but I cannot recommend it as being of the same quality as a Panasonic for Tomtom BT use.
