Hi All,

Left numerous messages for Alk support to see if the RoyalTek RTG-2000 RDS-TMC Bluetooth GPS Reciever is supported in V7, sadly Support or sales have never come back to me if it's supported.

Anybody Know if it is??? or they are using it with V7 and TMC-RDS???

Is this function in the UK Free...

Ok, It's official from the Tech Support Deprt of ALK

Royaltek RTG-2000 Bluetooth GPS is supported.....However if you also want to use Traffic via RDS/TMC the Royaltek RTG-2000 TMC/RDS functionality is not currently supported as the current build of software is untested with RoyalTek TMC Protocol V1.0

They plan to release a patch when this functionality will be added to the software, but they are unwilling to give a tiime frame.

Update from Co-Pilot Tech Support

Dear xxxx

Thank you for contacting CoPilot Technical Support.

At present, the only way to obtain traffic information through CoPilot v7 is by using the GPRS traffic service. The functionality of this software with the TMC service is presently with our development team and consequently we do not currently have a list of compatible RDS/TMC GPS receivers.

If you have any further questions, or feel that this incident has not been resolved to your satisfaction, please do not hesitate to bring this to our attention.

Regards,

CoPilot European Technical Support

Quote from web site
"Customers can access certain traffic information via the RDS TMC network. To receive TMC traffic information you will need to purchase a separate TMC antenna or compatible GPS receiver."

So why on earth list RDS/TMC Funtionality when it's not in the product Yet!

Take a look at what happened with the launch of the TomTom x10 PNA range, they claimed RDS-TMC support, but in reality the hardware (and software) took some considerable time to reach the end user and what did appear was not good (classic understatement), only towards the end of last year was this debacle sorted out to some extent (it is far from perfect though to be honest).

IF ALK are reading this make sure your RDS device has an external aerial connection point for the following reasons:

1/ Athermic glass ruins FM signals.
2/ RDS data transmissions are low power in the UK.
3/ Not everyone wants "string" strewn around the windscreen.
4/ Tapping in to the cars aerial makes a big improvement.

Consider a device that is purpose made, with addaptors and the necessary blocking capacitors to bar the DC voltage from some car stereo's from affecting the RDS device - sales of the addaptors would be additional to the device but this would give an end user reliable reception - the issue of data quality is a different matter all together.

So far only one RDS-TMC receiver I have used has the external aerial option, all the others are using pathetic bits of string wire as the receivers main feed - this impairs reception in a signifficant way.

If you can get this right so reception actually works you will be the first - Mike

I totally agree with your comments on software house's getting the product correct before letting rip on the paying public. However, why list it on the web site when it's not actually available to the paying public. When i last checked the ALK web site RDS-TMC it's still being listed as Traffic Tool in the suite. Why not list it as Coming Soon..... at least the paying public would know that it's a feature in development.

My RoyalTek RDS-TMC works perfect with it's stringy piece of wire and suckers, it's a bit of a mess but i get perfect reception (RDS-TMC) with Route66.....i have no complaints with this little GPS unit.

My complaint is with Software Houses listing product features on the web site... but not enabled in the current product.

Yogi-Bear,
I bought a Royaltek RTG-2000 some time ago as it appeared to be a good price. I have been looking for the right navigation software ever since...
I am concerned about TrafficSam as they only have one distributor in the UK for ver 7 - that bothers me.
You mention Route 66 but I have sent several questions to them regarding; Do they support UK postcodes, do they support Premium TMC eg TraficMaster (is it included in price).
They haven't bothered replying.
This thread concludes that I will not get my TMC receiver working with Navigon TM6.
Do you (or anybody else) have any advice on what I should buy?
---Why can't these companies let us 'try before we buy', it would be a lot easier! ---
Thanks
Chris

Hi Chris,

The following work with the Royaltek RDS/TMC unit

Taken from the Royaltek Web Site
Destinator 6 for PDAs
Destinator 6 for PDAs & TrafficSam(But doesn't support TMCpro in Germany
Destinator v6.1.1 for PDAs & TrafficSam
ROUTE66 Navigate 7

Personally used
Working
Route66 V7 (Needs TMC Plugin of which is an additional cost)
Destinator 6 (works ok but slow on my PDA)

Not Supported
Navigon - Support said thay had no intention of supporting the unit

Unreleased
IGO8 - They said that they will be supporting in IGO8, however it is not released yet.

Untested
Sygic - Just got this, it includes RDS/TMC however i have not tested yet. First impression v/good on speed and screen drawing, but on speed warning somewhat strange. Yet to test the TMC funtionality.

Co-Pilot - Have confirmed that the unit will be supported, however no release date for activating it in the product.

Hope it helped.

Yogi-Bear
Thanks for the reply. Much appreciated.
Can you tell me if Route66 v7 has UK postcode lookup?
I understand it has some sort of 'smart' engine but it appears to revolve around address'.

Thanks
Chris

Hi Chris,

No - Route66 has limited postcode support i.e. sw3 8 but not full postcode sw3 8pf.

However what it does do on the limited postcode support is list all of the rounds surrounding the partial postcode, so it's nearly as good as full postcode support. providing you know the road.
