Good evening folks and I hope you've all had a great Christmas.

I am looking to take my Tomtom one (4N00.012) apart. Yes thats right apart. I'm looking to permenantly insert the tomtom into my Vauxhall Astra centre console. Once in I will not have access to the on/off button.

I want to take it apart solder some wires to create a remote switch so that it can turn off/on from a remote locate. I'm guessing it shouldn't be too hard Rolling Eyes Laughing.

Anyway my question is has anyone done this before, is there any pictures or better yet a guide to dismanting it? Is there anything I should watch out for? Is what I'm attempting possible or is there a way of using the touch screen to turn the unit on?

Many thanks in advanced
jam

I found this on the internet, about changing the battery, so that should get you inside the TomTom.

1. Remove front bezel
2. unscrew 4 small screws (1 hole has anti tamper tape over)
3. remove "dome" rear of unit.
4. Remove 2 screws holding speaker in
5. Carefully remove all metal tape covering electronics
6. Remove 4 small screws securing PCB to unit
7. Remove 2 screws holding black plastic battery clip
8. Unplug small battery connector from PCB board.
9. remove battery and insert new one

Then do all of the above in reverse!

Unit fired straight up when all put back together
you will need the proper torx head screwdrivers, these came with the new battery I
bought for a tenner on ebay.

p.s. torx drive T8 size for outside casing and speaker screws, T6 size for inside screws.

I am not sure about opening the TT unit to modify it but i know that a lot of heat is generated behind the dashboard and might cause problems for your TT. Also their is alot of wiring so make sure you know where you are modifying is a good place. I am also an Astra (MK4) owner so please let me know how you get on asjam86. hope it works out for you.

The Mk4 Astra's had (in later life) a sat nav option. Although never fitted to my car I have purchased a centre console for a car with savnav (£15 from Vauxhall) and intend to mount the tomtom there with a switch hidden from view in the drivers cubby hole.

I am quite happy modifying my car and am very logical and electronics doesn't phase me either as I can quite happily build electrical circuits. I know it has been done before but they used a tomtom mount and a different version of tomtom entirly. I use my tomtom nearly everyday with my job so keep hiding it everytime I step out of my car is just annoying. So permanently mounting it, is the ideal option. If they do want the tomtom they'll have to dig out the console from the car.

Get some practice with a soldering iron and desoldering surface mount components before you undertake surgery on the actual unit Wink
But once it is done a few pictures of the install or a small write up would be of interest to some site members - Mike

Sounds more like a GO Classic or x00 model?
