I just shouted blahdiblahdiblahdiblahdiblah at mine (quiet computer bedroom, but without my teeth in!) and the top right corner turned orange, then eventually after a few seconds of thinking (!!) listed cities - first one was Llanbadarn Fynydd (IIRC).
Like I've said before and elsewhere, this is a terrific feature which should have been introduced next year, not rushed out in this very poor implementation. It would be ideal for PostCode navigation, handsfree dialling, probably ALL the functions it possesses - Simply activate by shouting MENU or something, then away you go. And I'm just a daft old man, but they could have asked me. _________________ Dennis

Here is a link to a short demo I made demonstrating speech recognition on my 720 , notice you don't need to wait on single numbers being recognised.
I don't have a BBC voice!, rather a local Scottish accent and it recognises my voice

I can't get it to work at all even with the files from Shaun. It's all pants.
Will contact TomTom to see what they say about a replacement...Pixmania returns here we come.../sigh
Thanks for the help all...Closest I can get is the orange symbol up in the top right and London Luton Airport displaying as text!! ...I'm just wondering if this unit has come back once before...

Remember your contract is with pixmania, NOT Tom Tom. Do NOT get into the repairs cycle, insist on replacement. In my experience (and I can claim some when I'm now up to GO720 #6 and #7) politeness and reasonableness are very good starting points. _________________ Dennis

OK I've emailed Pixmania...this is going to turn into a nightmare I'm certain of it...will try TomTom once more tomorrow. If I can get this going it's better than going through a replacement process I'm sure!

If anyones Voice Recognition STOPS working, as opposed to not working from new....
MY Go720's voice recognition worked (as well as it ever does) for a few days (I bought it while on holiday) until I got home and started tinkering.
I never worked out exactly at what stage it stopped working, but I suspect that it was when I replaced the MapSettings.cfg with one from my Go300 (to get my favourites etc. on the new machine. This always used to work to transfer settings, but might mess up some of the new features.
Anyway, I had to EITHER do a "return to factory settings" OR do a restore of my "day one/untouched state" backup, at which point the speech recognition returned to life. |

Well I'll be...I've got it working....I deleted my old favourites...didnt work...then realised I had deleted the Europe folder...put that back....then went to maps and chose Western Europe as the map...bingo now works with speech!
Is this map OK to use for the UK? Why would it have Western Europe AND UK as a seperate map? If I'm good to use Europe then I'm working with speech!
Cheers |

Which takes us right back to the question of "what on Earth were you sold?"
A 720 should only come with a Western Europe (and a Canary Islands) map. The Western Europe should cover the UK fine.
Glad the original MapSettings.cfg fixed it though. |

So Andy the post count poster turns up the magic again!! Absolute totally grovelling grovel apology called for now, innit? I'm going to give this a try some time soon Andy, to see if it improves mine - just as soon as I can get up the impetus to list all my favourites for re-entry - I presume the speech recognition stayed working after you re-entered them manually? What on earth were you doing to discover this? I too copied my mapsettings across, just like we advise everybody to do. Why would you want to be without your favourites etc? You must have a really devious mind - I'm not sure I should be trying to fix up a meet and I'll sure as hell never let you get your hands on any of my GO720s!! _________________ Dennis

At least he was man enough to admit what he'd done, Dennis. He could have just kept quiet! _________________ Anita
