Hi everyone, just thought this might be of interest to some of you.

I've just picked up an Lidl flyer from the store and there is a new offer being sold from 8th April. The unit is called the Falk Navigator 2004. It looks very similar to the Medion bundle that Lidl used to sell and the one that is now being sold by Halfords. It is £50 cheaper than the Halfords offer i.e £349. I've yet to find out any details about this unit yet (is it a clone of something else). If I do find out anything I'll let you know, or if anyone finds out any details please post here or reply to me personally.

Me again,

I've just found this link:

http://www.computeruniverse.net/products/e90095146/Typhoon_MyGuide_4500_SD/CF_incl_Falk_Navigator_2004_on_256_MB.asp

It's a little bit German but gives you a full low down on the specs. Seems to be the business. The site is offering it at €499 with 2 year warranty, so £349 with a 3 year warranty from Lidl seems a good deal.

The PDA itself looks like an Asus MyPal, see http://www.asus.com/products/pda/event/a620/ .

Well spotted Darren, the two units are identical!

Here's the ZDNET review of the Asus A620 (and also now the Typhoon 5500).

Oops,

Don't ask me why but I said Aldi, what I should have said was Lidl! Embarassed

Thought I'd better let you know in case anyone starts harassing the staff at Aldi.

Yep... it's definitely Lidl and here's a link to the kit specs:

http://www.lidl.co.uk/gb/index.nsf/pages/c.o.oow.20040408.p.Satellite_Navigation_System_with_Pocket_PC

But...

Only available from stores in London, the South East and the South West of England and South Wales. Check in store for availability

Can someone change the store name in the title to match what has been said here.

On a slightly different tack we have been getting flyers in our papers [West midlands] for a high spec PC from Aldi. Seems good value though there is no monitor; you pay for that if you need one.

The only drawback being that our Aldi does not take credit cards; so it has to be a debit card or cash!

First off forgive my bad english,

but I wanted to give some more details on the LIDL PDA Navigation set. I bought this set here in Germany yesterday, so I can give some more information:

The PDA is as mentioned based on a ASUS A620, but enhanced by 32 MB Flash ROM, where the Navigation software is already installed. So no need for ANY installation, and the Navigation Software survives any Hard Reset or Battery failure. Thats a big plus. The Navigation Software comes from the company Map&Guide. In the UK it is best known as Map&Travel.

The bundled mouse is a Holux GM 210.

The package includes a USB cradle, a car holder, a protection case, huge and detailed documentation, a 256 MB CF card with all map data and POIs preinstalled.

Hope this helps

Regards

Icy

Thanks for the practical review icy. How do you find the accuracy of the routing software and do you have anything you can compare it to. I think I'm right in saying that the software has taken it's maps from NAVTECH which I believe other software packages use too.

Also, if you can pass on any other information like time to a signal fix etc. that would be a great help. Thumbs Up

On the subject of bargins, (and before everyone starts camping outside their Lidl stores Exclamation ) ebuyer.com are selling TTN3 + wired gps receiver for £119.22 (£160.63 gets the BT version!). Add an HP2210 from Globalpositioningsystems.co.uk for £215, and you have a system for slightly less, with arguably better components. OK, I know you don't get the cradle mount and CF card as with the Lidl system, but worth considering?

I'm just a newbie though, as I'm considering a system myself I would be interested in the opinions of the experts. Confused

Well if it were me I'd go for:
iPAQ 2210..........£215
TTN3 wired.........£120
256 CF card.........£35
--------------------------
TOTAL..............£370

Well worth the extra £20 of anyones money I would think.

Add BT instead of wired and it costs £410
