Sorry if the info is a bit vague but I am about to try installing the cameras on a friends Navman and would like to make sure I have some sort of recovery if it goes belly-up.

Personally I have a TomTom and don't suffer from the type of procedure for the camera install that I have so-far read.

At the moment all I know is it's a Navman 510 (probably about 12 months old) and never been molested and he has a USB cable to go with it, if it comes with a disc he will have that also.
I don't know if he has the "SmartST" program, or is this also an extra.

Question?
Is it as simple as the write-up sounds apart from it being a bit tedious if I install the whole set of "Speed Zones Complete"?

Obviously any help will be most appreciated.
Thanks

Theres not really any "back-up" facility. If it goes wrong then the safety camera files are not loaded, if it works, then they are Very Happy

If you use the single safety camera file, then it should not be tedious, either. The tedium comes from the multiple files, where each speed, mobile, specs and so on are in individual files. As the Navman system only allows for 16 different personal POI files (plus/minus some, depending on which thread you read) then that number of files can cause a problem.

Thanks for the reply.

As I said earlier, I'm a little vague with the info I have at the moment and just trying to get prepared for when he comes back later this week from holiday.

I have seen mentioned "SmartST iCN 530"
Do you know if this program will run with the 510?
Although I don't know if this is a new or old version.
Or again, does the SmartST program come with the system originally?

If it's a removable card, then thats not a problem for a backup, or is it a built-in drive?

The main reason for asking all these questions is because after volunteering to have a look, I don't want to mess it up.

The Navman ICN 530 is a different unit.

The software should be SmartST 2005.

It comes on CD accompanying the unit and is loaded on to the PC.

On the Navman unit, there is some software resident in memory, but most is on a removable SD card. I don't have any idea which needs to be where.

Again thanks very much for your reply, you've been very helpful.

It may well be to-wards the end of next week when I do it, but I will let you know how it went.

I spoke to him today on the telephone (mobile)
It appears they haven't gone yet, but he's not bothered until he gets back.
So it will be a later than expected before I get back with the results.

Although I don't really think there will be any problems, as I manage to sort and fix most things and he does have the SmartST disc that came with the system.

Just that I wanted other peoples thoughts on the matter before I started.

Update: He changed his mind and we have now done it before he goes.

All went well and no problems, although I was a little surprised that I could not select my own sounds for the cameras, but apparently there is a facility in a later version of the software to do this, which I will have to try and find out about. "Unless anyone else can help"

Thanks again.

As far as I am aware, (with the same codicil as yours, "if anyone knows....") no-one has been successful in getting an alternative sound to work with ICN 510/520.

You can load one up, it will work until it has warned of the initial safety camera, then all goes quiet, direction instructions, the lot. Crying or Very sad

I'm quite sure that there are people out there that have tried and will be more knowledgeable than myself, "so I think I might just leave well alone as far as the sounds are concerned". Also with not having the system to play around with also makes life harder.

By the way, guys, there is a limited back-up facility for this device. See page 92 of the Manual. I think you can back up your preferences, favourites and 'My Home'.
Quote:
To Back up your Preferences, Favourites and My Home
1. On the Smart Desktop File menu, click Backup.
The Backup window will display.
2. Click New Backup.
The New Backup window will display.
3. Click OK.
The New Backup window will close. The backup will be listed on the Backup window.
4. Close the Backup window.

This post in April 2005 (!) mentions that it is impossible to install other than the pre-installed sounds (wav files). Have a look HERE

Have a look at this post from August 2005 instead -- explains how it's done.

This post from Dec 31 2004 (!) warns about out the problem you mention and says that it goes away if you are careful to encode your wav file in a very specific format -- as long as it is encoded as 8 Bit, 1 Channel and 11KhZ frequency things work fine. However, I think it's likely these problems are specific to models running Navman's proprietary OS (e.g. 6xx), not WinCE based models (e.g. 5xx).

Thanks for ALL the replies people it is and was really appreciated, but as it's not my SatNav and I don't have the facility to play around with it, I will be leaving it as it is with the default sounds.

Once again, thanks.

You can back it up by copying everything under "\My Flash Disk" to your PC. Everything in the other folders gets restored after a hard reset (from the so called ROM).
