A few years back HTC released an extremely intriguing device - the HTC Universal. That was the first VGA device with a usable keyboard and even with UMTS support. The Universal was near ideal. The screen was a bit small, the device had no external display, and no built-in GPS. But other than that it was a true beauty.

I thought that a whole range of products would follow the Universal, but I was wrong. We had to wait a good two years before anything remotely resembling the Universal came onto the market.

This year HTC presented the Advantage (also known as Athena, X7500, T-Mobile Ameo etc), and I was very curious to see if the device can live up to the heritage of the Universal. Having put the Advantage through some rigorous tests over the last few months I am now ready to share my impressions.

I see Easydevices have it on their site for £521.99 a lot of money for casual navigation.

You can get the T-Mobile version from as little as £79 the only difference being the colour - its silver; otherwise for once T-Mobile have left the hardware alone.
The only bad mark against T-Mobile is their recent announcement that WM6 will not be made available for devices that originally shipped with WM2005 installed - and this includes the Ameo, so I will unlock my Ameo and install another ROM at some point when I feel I want to try WM6.

As for casual navigation the device is so versatile in use that the GPS can become a secondary function of the device, it’s a brick and a half in terms of size and weight but a very nice device all the same - Mike

I do agree that the price is on the upper limit of the scale but the Universal was not much different when it came out. And the Advantage packs a hell of a lot of features in for that price. Whenever 3G video telephony will take off this device will be perfect for the task.

O2 Obits ship with WM6 now, and they have made the upgrade from WM5 - WM6 available for download for those that had the earlier version with WM5

As for casual navigation, that was quoted from the review.

- Conclusion -

So - is the Advantage fit for navigation? I would say yes - it is fit for casual navigation.

One criticism was of poor GPS reception due to the internal antenna.

This could easily be resolved using an external aerial - according to the HTC website there is a socket for this.

I don't remember if I mentioned that in the review but if you have loaded large maps (I am running TomTom with a 1.4GB North America map off the MicroDrive) then you should expect some sluggishness in the user interface. Not too much, but clearly noticeable, particular during address entry. Other programs (iGO, CoPilot7 etc) were quicker.
