Well a lot of places say heated front screen elements will effect your signal...........

....but i have used my Tom-Tom 500 for over 2 years in my Landrover [heated screen] without any problems whatsoever, and a Mio P350 for a couple of days now and doesnt seem to be affected either.

Maybe i'm lucky??

The heated screens are no problem but athermic (heat resisting screens) can cause a lower signal, although with SiRF 3 devices it won't make a great deal of difference.

THIS ONE is in your price range.

I have a Mio 168 and use it in my ford focus ghia estate (06 model) with heated windscreen back and front never had any problem and never had to use the external reciever and the mio is not sirf 3,just the built in reciever, so pesonally cannot see any problem.

I'd say Mio, TomTom and Garmin. All have good units under your budget and all can use our database so no loss of features compared with the Road Angel.

In my experience, I have found the Ford Quickclear screens DO affect the GPS signal, albeit, to a lesser degree than athermic screens. It also depends on the GPS unit being used!

My TomTom Go works wonderfully in my 54 plate Mondeo, but my PogoDrive can't handle the reduced signal. In the end I purchased a re-rad antenna to solve the problem. At least all my GPS devices I use obtain a good signal!!

The other piece of evidence is the detection range on my Beltronics RX-65 - if it's not placed in either the left or right edges of the screen (where the heating elements can't cover), then its detection range is reduced!! (Yes, I know the RX-65 is not a GPS device, but just goes to show the elements can affect a signal).

The significant factor is how the coating is applied - Athermic is applied to the whole of the screen (possibly with areas left clear of a coating), wheas the Ford Quickclear screens use the same technology as the heated rear widscreen (albeit much finer and closely spaced filaments) so there is still a significant area of the screen without any coating for a signal to pass through unhindered.

Hi Maka,

I have used a Garmin i3 for a couple of years now mounted to the dashboard of a Ford Focus with heated windscreen and never had a problem.

Regards,

Robert Swanson

I have no problem with my NUVI 660 on the GPS signal. However the integrated TMC received cannot cope with the screen and I have resorted to cutting the end of the TMC antenna and hooking it up to a Maplin external aerial that mounts over a side window.

04 plate focus with 'quick clear' front screen.

garmin nuvi 360: no problems
garmin i3: slow to get signal and then only weak
fujitsu loox n100: no problems
navman icn750: no problems
tomtom go classic: no problems

i guess the i3 just uses a cheaper chip-set as this is the only one i have had any issues with
