So TomTom say they the 720 units have started to be shipped at the end of July. As the manufacturing factory is in China and they usually ship by container across the waters, then it should take about 6 weeks to get to the UK providing the weather is OK (!!!).

This means that they aren't realistically going to arrive in the UK until about the end of August/beginning of September unless somebody is willing to pay the premium of air freight.

Perhaps this is why there is still no mention on the UK website of the 720 yet?

Oh so cynical! I think you'll find initial stocks were pre-delivered to TomTom hence the low numbers. That way they could ensure they were shipped with the latest retail firmware without delay.

Some stocks already in shops on the continent so I am informed.

I had a look around UK argos and PC World stores at the weekend, both are listing them on their stock database but needless to say no units were in store. Can the first person who confirms UK based stock please post.
Thanks.

Above all the other features, I am interested to know if the NavCore 7 routing engine has been significantly improved over v6 and if the destination directions now state which side of the road the destination is on.

Also does the unit have a calculator function?

Difficult to measure if the routing engine has been improved but it does not have a calculator nor does it know what side of the road addresses are on.

It does know what side of the road an address is, it doesn't say which side but if you look at the map closely the destination flag will be on either side of the road.

That's not entirely true, it makes a guess on which side of the road a house number is and roughly how far along that road it is based on start and end numbers. This guess may be accurate in most cases but it is just a guess and in some cases can be wildly inaccurate.

Is it just guessing? I didn't know that, I just thought the ones it had down on the incorrect side of the road were just incorrect programming. Thinking about it, it does make sense when the odd time the house number I've been looking for is quite a way out.

I would say it DOES show which side of the street.
Most residential streets in the UK have the odd numbers on one side and the evens on the other.
Whenever I've bothered to look, my Go always has a little kink at the end of the coloured line for the route to one side or the other of the road, and that is always right, even if the actual position is out by a few yards.

D'y know, I always wondered what the technical name for it was. Thanks Andy Thumbs Up

I was greatly impressed the day I got a delivery to do one winter evening, No 2, Something Cottages in a village at the back of beyond. When Jane said "You have reached your destination" (pitch black countryside), I looked out the van window and there indeed was number 2, right at my side. I like magic like that (and it did have a little kink pointing at it too).

It's probably because even if they only have one unit (possibly initial sample sent to their head office) their computer says that they are now in stock - it was the same with all the companies I phones about the ONE XL's EUROPE when they were launched. As soon as I find someone with 720's in stock and "FOR SALE" then I'll let you know......

Forgive me for being thick but why would a phone work with a 500 on the PLUS services but not with the 720. What would the difference be?

Software! The x20's use Navcore 7. A previously supported phone is not a given.

Next question....

Can the speech recognition for the destination also work for entering postcodes?

Cheers
Paul

Hi there,

I have ordered my 720, upgrading from my old 500.

I have a few of questions:

1) Does the unit come with any sort of case or do I need to buy one?

2) Is the screen size the same as the TomTom XL as I want to by a stick on screen protector?

3) And lastly, how easy is it to change the car icon ( I have a Ford Focus)?

Thanks in advance for any guidance?

Kevo
