Hiya
I'm a bit new to all this POI stuff, so forgive me if this is an obvious question.
I am looking for the best method and sources to download and combine POI's.
i.e. I want to press a button, and it'll download a pre-defined list of POI files, and combine them into categories that I define. Then I can upload to my PDA.
I use TomTom 6 on Windows Mobile.
Obviously this all has to be free! Wink
Thanks in advance

See down the left of the page under
Points of Interest
POIs

Whether you can combine different ones into your own sets depends how good you are at doing that sort of thing.

I think the OP is looking for an automated download. Because they are created 'on the fly' on this site, I don't think it will work.

Probably the nearest you will get is poiedit for semi auto download and you can point them where you want, probably need a bit of thought on combining though and unfortunately it will not work with this site.

Thanks for the replies.
I tried the "Download POI's" on the site, but it rarely worked.
Cant just be me thats this lazy! I think its time someone wrote something!!
For now I think I will convert the OV2's to CSV. Combine the CSV's, and re-convert back to OV2.
Thanks again.

I stand to be corrected (because I don't know nuthin guv), but I was under the impression the Garmin download is CSVs already - no need to convert from OV2.

Anyway, please satisfy a nosey old man's curiosity? What would you be combining into your own category? You've got me thinking you'd like to combine Barclays Banks with Shell petrol stations and MacDonalds burger shops into one category, called Barclays Petrol Burgers. My own combination idea would be to combine all petrol stations into one rather than have separate Esso, Shell, BP etc, but you can already do that with the POIs from the download page here.

Thanks for the Downloading Garmin tip.

I was trying to avoid using the "Download POI" on this site as its going to take me a lot of clicks everytime I want to update my kit. It doesnt appear to work if u select too many categories.

So (as suggested on this forum) I looked at POIEdit, which is a great app but it doesnt appear to be able to download the same set of data that is available on this site. And the data on this site seems to be the best!!!

(Before I realised the data here was the best) I was trying to use POIEdit's auto downloader to grab as much data from various sites, and then combine into categories (such as Banks, Fuel etc).

I guess the perfect solutions would be if the "Download POI" worked perfectly everytime, or POIEdit could access the data on here.

I think I need to "bite the bullet" and get clicking on here! 8O
Thanks for the advice

Have you tried the Show Link option?

Yes, I tick that everytime.

I choose TomTom, UK, Accomodation, Download as 1 file, Show Link. Then Click download.

I've tried this on IE7 and FireFox here. And IE6 at another site (to rule out a connection problem). Firefox just shows a blank page, and both IE's show a DNS error, but the domain name in the URL is fine. Wierd!

a fair assesment, and must concur it would be an ideal world if the database worked with poiedit and the minor but irrating problems with the database are resolved. but hopefully it will get there eventually.

Not being a POI download aficionado (today's new word Andy Smile ) my understanding was you select and download 20 of the accommodation as one file, then do another 20 and so on, then eventually, using something or other, combine them (e.g. using CSV downloads, you concatenate [yesterday's word] them or stick 'em together using POI Edit, whatever that is).

Being a (decent program) Lotus 123 Aficionado, that's how I'd concatenate them myself, of course.

Well, serves you right for asking an ignorant old man!!

PS Pssst - anybody like a hand crafted reset tool?
