Traveling between Bewicke and Edinburgh on the A1, its a dual carriage way with plenty of cameras as my pda TT5 running database displayed.

Now I was traveling with cruise control at 70-75 depending on road incline with no other traffic for about 1/4 of a mile on either direction, when camera on the opposite side flashed, but no warning from pda as it was setup to only alert if on route.

Now, if I get the winning letter with 3 points and £60 for Tony Blair's retirement party, do I have a legal leg to stand on?

I always thought cameras where setup to detect speeding on their side of the road and flash the car from behind?

Any help appreciated.

As has been in the press recently cameras are now being installed that photograph from the front to aid recognition.

I would go to http://www.pepipoo.com/ and ask there as they specialise in this sort of thing.

Speedometers over-read your speed. If you are travelling along at 70MPH, your true speed will be approx 2-3 mph less. 70 for me is actually 67mph according to my GPS systems I use in the car.

If the SCP for that area stick to the "10% + 2" rule, then it is unlikely you will get an NIP - for a 70 zone, and using the above, 79MPH would be minimum speed they would start handing them out. Be aware, not every area will use this guideline.

If the camera was on the nearside verge of the opposite carriageway then you will almost certainly not be prosecuted. It is more likely that a vehicle on that carriageway triggered it and assuming it's a GATSO it's type approved for rear facing photography only.

I have past a "Gatso" camera in Canterbury, Kent, twice in the last six months going in the "wrong" (facing it, not going past it to flash me from behind as designed) direction - and i was flashed, despite no other vehicles around.

On both occassions i was borderline on speed, the first time, although i had known that the camera was a "Gatso" i was so surprised to see the flash that i turned around to check the camera to see it it had been changed to a "Truvelo" (the camera that flashes from the front) but no it was still a "Gatso".

I have never received anything in the post and still have no idea as to why it happened, other than the camera might have a fault.

I have been flashed going towards a camera on that stretch of road even though the speedo was just a few mph over limit.....didn't receive the dreaded N.I.P.

There's a conventional rear-facing Gatso on Chiswick Bridge that takes a BIG overspeed to trigger normally, but seems to have a real liking for motorbikes going in the opposite direction!

Also, if you think about it, the second flash will probably miss you completely if you are going in the opposite direction, plus there won't be any confirmation lines painted in the position you would be in either.
