ANN: Postcode support for TTN2 on PocketPC

Hi All,

Thanks to help from psionman, I can now announce that a new database has been built and placed on the web site. It contains 2,264,992 post codes which is around 600,000 more than the previous version, which should address most of the missing code issues reported. I've checked all the ones that I've had reported missing to me and they're all in the database.

Note that the unpacked database file has grown from 12.8MB to 17.2MB, so if youre short of space on your storage card it may no longer fit. I am working on compressing this further for future versions.

I'd love to, but the suggested location (M4 corridor as far as I remember) is just a bit too far away from here, I think. Unless I can manage to arrange a business meeting in the area on that date, of course!

I've just copied over the new ukpostcode.dat file to my PDA.

Curiously, Show on Map is displaying different map positions for postcodes that were in the old database. The difference seems to be about 100m or so.

You are of course right - rather than merging the databases, I built the new database entirely from data based on OS grid references with a 100m resolution. Strangely enough, some postcodes are more accurate using the new database, but I guess others might suffer.

My personal postcode is spot-on using the new database, and was 100m away on the old database (there are only eight houses sharing the postcode so I know where it should be).

I've noticed the same offset on the latest version. If I enter my own postcode, it puts me in the next street - about 75 yards west of where it should be

Is the 100m position bug/error going to be fixed>? (if so ill wait to download the updated file etc)

Yes, it is being looked at right now. It occurred to me that using 100m OS grid refs would place the codes, on average, 50 metres south-west of the correct location, so I am just building a database with a 50 metre correction factor added. I'll report back when I have news...

Hmmmm....

Not too easy to fix, I'm afraid. The OS references are just not that accurate, it appears. I've found a large number of nearby postcodes that have the same OS reference, so I think I may have to have a rethink on this. For the moment, I will remove the new database from my site until I've come up with a solution.

Could you keep the old database, but add to it any entries from the new one that don't already exist in the old one? That way you'd keep the better accuracy of the old one but add missing postcodes. Better for a code to be 75 yards out than not there at all.

One other point occurs on the accuracy of postcodes: some postcodes are large and the 100m precision won't matter too much. The 'centre' of the postcode might not even be on a street!
