|
|
I have been trawling round UK TomTom stockists and very few of them have Rider available. I'm wondering if there is a new/replacement model coming out. I don't want to buy one now and find it out of date as soon as it arrives! I suppose the upgrading the maps would be possible, but that's extra expense. Any ideas? |

There could be several reasons for the apparent short supply. First not many will stock the rider as demand for it must be quite low. I have two bikes and have not yet got around to fitting a Sat Nav device to either of them. Also except for the members of the bike clubs I belong to I dont know anyone else who has a bike, so at a guess 1 in 100 TomTom's are Riders. Its also seasonal and with the good weather we are having even riders like me are getting out and about early so perhaps they have purchased what was left of the stock before the dealers would normally begin to stockup again for the new season. |

Thanks for replying, you may be right, it's probably a seasonal market. Since I posted the question, I've done a bit more searching and although the TomTom site gives the price as 250 GBP, I found one site asking 400 GBP, one of over 500 GBP, and a trader on eBay with a 'buynow' price of $650. The eBay description was 'new for 2007'. So are the UK prices high due to scarcity?
But maybe the high US price is an indication that a new model is on the way?
Is there any significance to the description sometimes quoted as 'TomTom GO Rider', as opposed to 'TomTom Rider' on TomTom's website? I thought TomTom would sell these directly from their website, but I could only find a way to purchase accessories for the Rider, not an actual Rider unit! |

TomTom Rider IS for sale on their website.
Maybe you did what I just did when I went to check... I clicked on "products" then "Car navigation" like I normally do, and it wasn't there!
You have to select "Bike Navigation" which takes you to THIS PAGE |

I have never been very conversant with the Rider range but also looked at the TT site and noticed they now call it (local) meaning it only has the maps for your local area I assume it would be the same as TomTom One Regional. I did once think it had the maps of Europe as well and this could be part of the reason for seeing different prices within UK vendors. Making comparioson to anything in the USA dosnt really help becuase the mapping would be totally different again and everything is normally cheaper there anyway. |

Ahh, whatever you buy will be "out of date" in a year or so anyway. Think of mobile phones (or indeed, bikes) - new models come out all the time but that doesn't make your old one stop working!
Have a look at the Garmin Zumo too. _________________ Gone fishing! |
