Hi.
I have just brought a new Nuvi 660 and wanted to load the speed camera database onto it from Pocket GPS world. I have read on this site that some people are crashing their Nuvi loading POI. Is this likely to happen if I load Speed cameras?
Also have tried to do a backup of files from Nuvi. With Nuvi plugged in I go to windows explorer and copy files I get a message saying " Cannot Copy. Cannot read from source file or disk"
Any suggestions?
Thanks Tony |

The problems associated with loading POIs were people who loaded thousands of POIs in different categories, not the PGPSW Speed Camera Database - I have the PGPSW Speed Camera Database and MaFt's Garmin POIs loaded (with categories) and have no problems.
It sounds like you have a small amount of corruption on your Nuvi's internal disk - if you are confident about it, I can PM you some details of how to attempt to fix it, but it's not for the faint hearted.
If you go into the \Garmin\gpx directory you should be able to copy the current.gpx out of there - everything else in there is the corruption. With this file now saved, you can go to the \Garmin directory and take a fopy of all the files in there and all the others folders (ie all but the gpx folder). By doing this you will eventually get a full backup of your Nuvi, which you'll need if you want to try and remove the corruption... |

Hi Swing.
Thanks for your reply.
I have gone into the \Garmin\gpx directory like you suggested. in it I have a total of 35 Files and 36 Folders taking up a total of 51.0GB of space!! If I right click on Garmin Nuvi (K drive) and then properties it shows 1.78GB.... I am confused. I have tried to copy and paste individual files/folders into a new folder but each time it says "Cannot copy File. Cannot Read File from source file". All the other files/folders apart from gpx it will let me copy.
All I have loaded is "Garmin Travel guide" and updated Speed cameras from Garmins web site which have all gone into POI and takes up a total of 154MB. I am hapy to have a go at fixing the problem and would be very hapy for you to PM me details but am not sure where to start as I presume I need some backup of GPX files.
Your help is very much appreciated.
Thanks

No - the ONLY file you need out of the gpx directory is the current.gpx file - the rest are not real files, they are the corruption. |

Hi again Swing.
Apparently there are are a lot of Nuvi's coming out of the factory with these corrupe files.
As you say the only file needed in the gpx director is the current.gpx file. What I did in the end was a full backup, including hidden, on all the files and folders apart from the corrupted files, which you cannot copy anyway, in gpx. I then re-formatted the Garmin Nuvi (k) then copied and pasted all the files/folders that I had copied back into Garmin Nuvi (k).
Have checked the Nuvi. No more Corrupted files/folders and the GPS works fine. All my favourites were still even there
Maybe you can pass this on if you hear of anyone else who has the same problem as me.
Thanks

I'm more than aware of the format method - the method I PM'ed to you would have achieved the same thing with slightly less risk. However, I won't detail either the format method or the method I PM'ed you.
Glad you are fixed though.
Yes, I'm well aware there are a fair few Nuvi 660's leaving the factory in this condition, but Garmin deny all knowledge of it (which is strange, as it's being happening since mid-December). Please feel free to contact Garmin and inform them your unit had the \Garmin\gpx directory corruption and how you fixed it. Maybe if enough people tell them about it, they'll realise the problem and develop a fix in the next firmware update. |

Swing.
Sorry I did not see your PM until after I typed the above. Am a bit new to all this so still learning. I will tell Garmin of the problems I had. It may help others.
Best Wishes

Ok a little detail....... | If you have followed ACM454078's rough guide to fixing the problem and you now have no maps, they are a number of stages where it could have gone wrong, but I'm afraid unless the mistake was within the copying the files back onto the Nuvi, then chances are you will have to send the unit back to Garmin for them to fix.
However, you might want to go to Settings, Map, Map Info and see whether the City Navigator Europe v8 map is listed there - if it's listed, you may need to tick the box - if it's not listed, then the unit doesn't think it has a detailed map anymore.
In the case of having no map, without going through in minute detail every step of what you did, it would be difficult to work out where it went wrong, and it's likely the fastest fix is to return it to Garmin.
I'm afraid to say, although I have performed the method ACM454078 outlined to fix a Nuvi 660 directory corruption, it's not the method I would recommend anyone undertakes without understanding the risks and impacts. |
