On the way to the office this morning it was working fine...
On the way home form the office, nothing, no nmea sentences at all from the thing to TOMTOM, check all settings, all fine.

Eventually remove the gps from the place its hidden to check the status LED and nothing. Its only 2weeks old !!! Checked all wireing, the PDA (iPaq h5450) is charging fine from the same cable, the gps is just dead :-(

Going to phone Law Farrell (supplier) tomorrow, but will it happen again ? or are they reliable units ?

Si.

We have had a few that have 'just died', so have seen it before, but I'd say it's certainly less than 1%.

I'll bring this up with Leadtek, but in any case your supplier should change it without question.

I've been using the same one in my car for over a year now without problems, so it's one of those things I fear, but we will get to the bottom of it...

I've had it where the 9532 suddenly loses it's almanac and requires a long (12.5 min fix) when it hasn't been used for a few days, but this only happens about once every 3 or 4 months, I've never had a 9531/9532 die on me yet.

Dave, I assume the LED still lights up tho in that scenario ?

Interestingly LawFarrel (routeplanners.co.uk) didn't mention anything about knowing about the issue... they want the whole thing back for "testing". If they try to stitch me on this I won't be happy....

I have one of the original cased 9531's with the internal guts of the 9532, so I don't have an LED. I still get data coming through when monitoring, it just has lost most of the information. The battery is fine, and it only happens now and again like a glitz in the firmware.

Just got this from Law Farrell : "There seems to be a connection fault between Cable and recever at RJ11 connection."

A replacement is winging its way back.

Thx all and to LawFarrell :-)

hmm, this is getting silly. the replacement arrived very promptly on Friday and was fitted to my car. Worked fine over the weekend until this morning. Now its exhibting the same behaviour as the previous one, it powers the iPaq but no LEDs on the GPS are on, and no data stream is coming back. I'm going to have a thorough look at the cables and connections tonight as this is just stupid.

Anyone else have problems with the 9532 ?

Cheers

Sometimes the (rather nasty) RJ connectors can be a bit dodgy - I have had to replace a PDA cable before, visually nothing was wrong, but plug a 9532 in and nothing happened.

May be better to get a GPS9537 - then there are no wires!

Thanks Simon,

hmm, maybe you're right. Better check if LawFarrel do the bluetooth version, I'm not chucking 89quid away...
I was hoping for a nice wirefree install anyway (the car dash is in bits trying to hide it all), with the GPS hidden away. i guess with a BT install I still need to route power though...

bah, back to the drawing board....

In my car I have a power socket in the boot, so it's nice and easy to put the GPS9537 next to the side window at the back.

http://www.tdc.co.uk/gps/gps_receivers_leadtek.htm#gps9537 if you want to take a look.

Spoke to Law Farrell this morning. Very apologetic. not sure whats up but seems to point to power spiking/issues :-(

Its a brand new 2004 model saab 9-3 and i've had no other problems with spiking, but I guess the GPS electronics are susceptable to power issues. Doubt theres any point trying a 3rd unit so a refund is being organised and this is being sent back :-( Shame, it fitted exactly where I wanted it....

So onwards and upwards... Sounds like a BlueTooth GPS is the way forward with power routed to it. Can't use the back shelf as its a convertible and that moves :-)

Suggestions welcome :-)

Cheers

Our 1st Tomtom GPS receiver died within a day (hardwired in using supplied cable), the 2nd (Leadtek 9532) died after a month - that was using the cigarette lighter socket. The 3rd one arrived this morning and doesn't work at all!! All 3 had the light on the cradle showing but nothing on receiver (after dying).

Law Farrell also suggested a power spike, and I've put a posting on the Other Hardware and Accessories Forum to see if anyone knows a way to stop this - just in case that IS the problem. No responses as yet.

We've now sent the whole lot back to Law Farrell (receiver, cradle and cables), so hopefully a complete replacement will resolve this.
