New maps.....favourites?

I have now installed my new maps onto a new card and was pleasantly surprise to see that all my preferences have been carried over.

Trouble is my favourites haven’t.

I followed some earlier advice and copied the great-britain-plus-map.cfg file to the new UK and IE plus folder but still no favourites.

I see there is a file named MapSetting.cfg in the new map folder, should I have replaced it?

Any ideas please.

Copied from another answer:

The file is called "MapSettings.cfg" on v6 software.
Check you've got your file extensions displayed in Windows - important when dealing with the TomTom as so many of the files have the same name just a different extension. Note the capitals as well, they are important in Linux.

On older software versions, the file will be called {mapfoldername}.cfg instead, so it will be something like "Great_Britain-Map.cfg" (note particular underscores and hyphens too!) - so when you copy it across to a newer system you will need to rename it as above.

If all else fails you can convert all your favourites to be entries in a new custom POI category (call it 'My Favourites' or whatever) just using the 'New POI category' and 'Add POI' menus on the Go, then copy the MyFavourites.ov2 file across instead (and convert them all back again if you want).

The condensed version for your situation...
Take a copy of 'Great_Britain-Map.cfg' from old map folder
Rename to 'MapSettings.cfg' and save in new map folder

Can anyone please help. I've updated my old Go to the new maps and updated the software. I've followed the instructions to copy my favourites (after renaming to 'MapSettings.cfg') and it replaces the nearly empty file that is there after the download. But after removing the TT from the PC the favourites file I copied across is always replaced with the nealy empty file I had to start with! I have TomTomHome on my computer. Is that replacing the file from a backup?

Check that you have the PC showing Extensions, and that you're not renaming the File as MapSettings.cfg.cfg

If you do it with Windows Explorer, HOME won't affect it at all.

Thanks for the suggestion, Oldboy. I don't think that is it as the file is shown as a single .cfg and my 20k file of favourites does overwrite the less than 1k download file. It shows up as the 20k file in the TT folder.

It's just when I disconnect the TT from the PC and reboot that it reverts to the original small file and hence no Home or Favourites show. I am using 'Explorer'. I am using a new memory card (512MB) as the original card was obviously too small. I copied the smaller capacity TT original card to my PC before buying and dowloading the new maps on to the larger capacity card.

If I can't get my old favourites on, it wouldn't be the end of the world to pin point them again - most probably more time consuming to get the copying working.

Just a thought... do you still have the OLD map installed? (Installing the new one doesn't overwrite the old, so they are both still there) You aren't copying the MapSettings to the wrong folder by any chance?

As you say, the quickest way to get sorted may be just to re-create the favourites file from scratch using POIs.
If you can access the old favourites file in the old map, just:
1. Create a new POI category (Manage POI/ New POI category / call it "MyFavs" or whatever.
2. Convert your Favourites into POIs (Manage POI/ New POI / from Favourite etc.).
3. Copy that MyFavs.ov2 into your new map folder.
4. Then convert them all back to Favourites again (Manage Favourites/ New Favourite / from POI etc.).

Sifi, are you placing the MapSettings.cfg file INSIDE the map folder?

Don't confuse it with a .cfg file that is in the root directory.

Thanks for your replies, Andy and Jimbo. Firstly, it is a new memory card so there is no old map on. I am putting the file in the Map folder. Anyway, I've tried deleting the new MapSettings.cfg before copying across the old. It goes OK and shows it in Explorer until I turn the TT off, then on and it somehow reverts back - even though I deleted it. I'm not going to bother trying anymore but thanks for your help and suggestions.
