I'm with peterc10 - it's taking goods without paying, and that's theft.

It's this "I want it, and I'll take it without paying for it if I can" attitude
that's at the heart of so many of this country's (and indeed the world's) problems today.

Yeah but the majority of tomtom users who do pay for there software turn there noses up at the scroats that steal it and force the rest of us to pay more for there legit versions.

I disagree with that statement. The fact is TomTom, and in my opinion, the majority of companies in the I.T. type businesses price their goods on what they think we will pay to give them the biggest profit in as short a time as possible, especially in GB, and then at a later date reduce it just before a newer version appears. If your statement was correct them surely TTN5 for example would have gone up in price. Having purchased two genuine copies of TTN5 with maps of Western Europe inc. GB, I would be the last person to say it's OK to download 'cracked' copies, however I can understand why people do it.

And as for the definition of theft, if I had a choice of having my car broken into, having my front door kicked in, to get hold of my unit, or someone downloading illegal software, I know which theft I'd prefer.

the maps _are_ the same. But nowadays program versions have integrated locks that only allow them to see a certain range of map builds. one up for TomTom.

I wasn't intending to steal the map of him. If it worked it meant I could purchase the latest map from TomTom without having to resort to upgrading to TT6

Does anyone know the version of the downloadable map from TomTom? Mine is 605 but it's way out of date.
I'd much rather pay 59 euros for a map than £89 for TT6 which probably wont work with my XDA.

True.

I guess it depends on whether TomTom make more cash from selling the units or from the maps. I suspect it's the former - but may be wrong.

I personally think they've got it the wrong way around. They should concentrate on blocking dodgy copies of the software and maps on PPCs, and as a cunning marketing strategy turn a blind eye to dodgy upgrades from Regional to European maps for otherwise legit users. Because as you say most people wouldn't mind an upgraded map or where using UK maps the European ones (although i suspect most people that have the European maps will never actually use them). That way they'd have more and more people with the TomTom units and potentially more sales in the future. As things stand at the moment they must be losing thousands upon thousands of pounds because of people buying an iPaq or XDA, throwing on the dodgy software and the maps and getting everything from UK to Europe, USA and Canada all mapped out for the price of the hardware alone.

And lets be honest - there must be a few people trying to crack the TomTom hardware protection and when it's achieved i suspect there will be a lot of people that will update their maps and load on all the other country's maps (even if they won't use them). They could lessen the demand for these with clever upgrade options - but it seems TomTom prefer to milk every last penny they can out of the "legit" customers, but are happy to see thousands of users using the cracked ones on handheld PCs.

there are two very seperate views on this sort of issue mainly cos some folks have been "brainwashed" so to speak my the media others think for themselves a little more..

its media manipulation at work.. the term "piracy" was a deliberate creation of the people who make lots of money by selling us digital media.. a pirate as we all know aint a very nice dude.. he cuts throats and does all sorts of pretty evil things..

copywrite breach has been deliberately linked to such guys..

the dubious definition of theft and the linking of it to copywrite breach came next.. and the continuos linking of the two words "piracy" and "theft" bu the media has worked remarkably well for the creaters..

so well that a relatively minor offense gets linked to some pretty nasty activities in the minds of some..

of course actually being offered the "free" map upgrade by the proverbial mate does alter the mindset of some of these folks.. all of sudden it doesnt seem such a nasty crime after all.. he he he

its wrong.. but it aint as wrong as the movie moguls and other like them would have us believe..

your mind works in strange ways.. when all crimes are the same.. simply iillegal..

Sems a good definition to me...

i am not sure to be honest exactly what the modern definition of "theft" actually is.. i used to know and it was fairly simple.. "to deprive the owner permanently thereof"..

somehow i cant quite equate sharing a bit of music with your mates as doing this to anybody..

So depriving the owner (i.e. the musician/songwriter) permanently of the income he should have got isn't
a ) illegal, and
b ) immoral?

Greed does a great job of clouding obvious truths to some people...
