France and sat navs

Hi

I am going to france in 2 weeks time.
What is the law in france regarding using sat navs? I know you are not allowed to use radar scanners , however I am unsure regarding GPS sat nav systems.

Can anyone clear this one up please

I took three Satnavs with me to France last month (I know, but I was testing them, honest!) and didn't get a second glance, let alone a tug.

As it was explained to me, if you are stopped and the unit has camera positions marked on it, it will be confiscated but that was never confirmed.

Gps systems are legal in France, and also you can have the speed camera's on it as well there is no problem at all, but do not have a Detector they are not allowed and you will be fined if you are caught with them. please see the thread (latest infomation) THEY ARE LEGAL.

No problem with the satnav, at least it lets you concentrate on the French drivers and gives you chance to anticipate turnings in decent time.

DO be very careful around the ports. They are particularly keen on mobile radar traps to catch the tourists who've got a lot of ground to cover or may be cutting it fine for a return ferry. On Saturday I passed 3 seperate traps withing 50 miles of Calais on my way home. Fortunately, we'd allowed plenty of time and were just cruising along. I also saw quite a few on the edges of small towns and villages (this was in the Bergerac area). It's just not worth the pain or hassle of getting stopped.

But i am off to france on Tuesday 12th so should be good day. I will also set navman 510 to KPH so I am more aware of my speed!

just got to be careful of the speed traps!

Yesterday I had a Dutch colleague in my car.

I pointed out that speed camera positions were indicated on the screen. His response was that "such software was not legal in Holland". I found that comment surprising.
