If someone can point me to directions of how to do this I'd appreciate it. I've looked through the forums and can't find them.

I bought the Tom Tom all in one kit (cradle, windshield mount, GPS antenna) for Palm (TX). As expected, copying maps via HotSync takes far too long.

Can someone explain how I can copy the maps to my sD card using a card reader? I'm not quite sure how to tell what files I need to copy from the CDs and what folder to put them in on the sD card.

Thanks

Using the Tomtom installation disc, when it asks where you want to install the files use the 'other location' option and tell it a folder on your PC.

Once the installation has put everything in your specified folder, it is then a simple case of transferring the folder contents to the root of your SD card with a card reader.

This is much quicker than hotsync, and far more reliable too. Smile

Thanks a ton for answering that so quickly and without a "RTFM."

It's a step in the process that I was looking too quickly over and should have been able to figure it out myself - but it's nice to have someone answer so quickly and in such a helpful tone.

Thanks

You're most welcome. :D

Actually, if you stick around then you'll find there are alot of helpful folk here. The occasional 'RTFM' creeps in, but for the most part the majority seem to be happier assisting than ridiculing.

There is much to learn about your new toy, its little quirks and limitations, as well as all the great things it can do.

Enjoy your stay - and thanks for the polite remarks.

Eillo7, first many thanks for very helpfull answers.

I also just bought my first GPS TomTom5 bundle for Treo 650 and hit a snag with Hotsync. But I have a slightly different twist on the original question.

So here my questions:

  1. I plan to use a single 2GB card shared between both TomTom maps/apps and my other usual Treo stuff (backups, documents, few big apps like VersaMail, etc.). All my stuff is less than 256MB. Will I be able to fit also all TomTom US (and preferrably Canada) maps?
  2. In your solution you mentioned just to copy TomTom maps into the root of the SD card. Shouldn't it be something like Palm/Launcher folder?
  3. Is it possible to tell TomTom where to look for maps on SD card? What is the default?
  4. Can I run TomTom apps from the card or they should be resident?

I'll greately appreciate your help.

Thanks!

1. As you've just bought Tomtom you'll have a better idea than I do about how big the maps are - just custom install to your PC and it'll tell you how big the folders are. I'd be very surprised if they don't all fit on a 2GB card.

2. Tomtom is very specific about where it wants the folders - when you install the app it will create several folders in the root of the SD, and you must leave them where it puts them. When you custom install the maps to your PC they will go into a folder - take the whole folder and put it in the root (and don't change the name). This works for me on a T3.

3. No you can't specify a location - I know Tomtom searches the root of the card, and it is also very particular about the folder names it will see. You might have some luck putting maps in the Tomtom folder (I think I've read somewhere that this works for some people), but I don't know anything about how this method functions - particularly if you're using multiple maps (as the filenames are the same for each different country set...cname.dat, cnode.dat etc).

4. The actual application itself is the 'start.prc' file - this will copy itself to your device when you first run it...thereafter you can launch it from the card or the device, it doesn't matter. It will then 'call' various files on the card as it needs them (dataXX.chk files, munich.bin file etc etc) along with the map files.

Apologies in advance if anything above is incorrect - it is as I understand things, which isn't necessarily the same thing as reality.

I hope this helps. :D
