On your navigation display press the screen where the sat strength meter is (lower RH), then press version (its just above the "Done" button - this displays the information you want - Mike

I have a 500 which I purchased in April 2006 here in the UK and it shows western Europe map v606.

Any way of finding out how these compare to the versions which are purchasable/downloadable from TomTom?

I'm wondering when the latest version of WE was released.

Don't want to buy it now and find that a new version is around the corner!

Only by asking someone who's just bought one, I'm afraid, Bolty.
TomTom refuse to say what map versions they are selling (God knows why) and even when you email them directly, they send a fatuous reply along the lines of:
