Ahhh memories - used to have one of these Smile

Yes you can load worldmap onto it (I've got Worldmap and used to use it with my GPSV) and although the memory is limited on the V you will fit a fair chunk as the detial isn't very high.

But it won't route for you or provide directions as the map data doesn't have enough detail to do this.

The detail is restricted to major roads and places.

Hope this helps.......

As for recommendations .....

Can you tell me what you are going to use it for?

you might benefit from a more navigation based unit - such as the Garmin GPSMAP 76s - it has extra features you will find useful for basic navigation.

hi chris,
thanks for the help, yeah i have been looking at the 76! I'm of to afghanistan in july with the army. I know it sounds wierd but i'd quite like to be able to see where the nearest towns are etc, in case things go pear shaped when i'm out on the ground, and you have to make a bee line to the nearest place. I'm also planning on driving across Africa with my girlfriend in about 3 years, so ideally a gps for that. but i don't want step by step instructions etc. I've had a eTrek for years now and it's served me well in all corners of the world. But as maps of afghanistan are so bad i thought maybe a gps with basic mapping on maybe a worthwhile investment.

Do you know much about the magellen range? Thier on-line mapping programme looked to be more topo of the afghanistan region??

thanks for your help

Hi,

Not daft at all - very sensible IMHO. I've heard from mates they can help.

You might want to consider the 76 - just bear in mind the battery life is much better on the V.

Sorry I don't have a clue about Magellan.........
