This week our local newspaper had an article showing the new type of Digital Speed Camera(s) that had just been installed on the Edgware Road NW9.
These Cameras are possibly a mile apart and measure the AVERAGE speed between them.

I am wondering how these are going to be implemented into the Garmin (and other Sat Nav Devices) speed warning software systems?

Averaging speed cameras have been around for some time, and are known as SPECS.

Often seen on motorways where fairly long-term roadworks are going on.

They are included (in general) in the safety camera files that are downloadable from pocketgpsworld.com - but whether recent installation of the cameras are included, or not, I cannot say.

This webpage shows the camera in question - a single digital gatso, and definitely not a SPECS average speed camera.

Averaging SPECS are already in place on the M4 and in the database. The POI shows them as 70mph cameras, there is no format to alert along a distance, although you could manually insert cameras every 1000m (or whatever the alert distance is), to get a continuous warning if you are going too fast.

One of these cameras has turned up at Mersey Square in Stockport opposite Debenhams, its at the traffic lights and I thought it was just a traffic light cam, but according to that website it can double as a speed cam too. Do they still have to have the white lines on the road though?

CheckPOInt (addon for TomTom PDA Pocket PC version) has the ability to show your average speed once you pass the first SPECS camera, and keep this on the screen until after you pass the last camera. I'd love to see something like this integrated into the Garmin units. Even something simple like the ability to alert you to any overspeed during the zone.

Talking of white lines, I pass a series of cameras (normal yellow ones, Gatsos?) on my way to work, where all the white lines have recently been removed.

Does this mean the cameras are no longer active?

Not necessarily.

White lines are just for convenience, and another corroboration of the main speed detection in the GATSO.

An overlay for the photo footprint or some other aspect to the picture could be used.

Do these really measure average speed or just speed?

Only speed - you need the SPECS system of cameras for average speed.
