I want to get a PDA for use with Memory Map when walking & cycling - not that bothered about the native PDA functions.

My dilemma is whether to go for an integrated PDA/GPS like the Mio A201, or a normal PDA (iPAC) and separate bluetooth GPS receiver.

The A201 seems to have advantages, e.g. only 1 device to carry; charge batteries etc. but I wonder how practical & robust is it (when not in a car) with the flip up aerial.

Specifically, are there cases or holders that will protect it outdoors with the aerial deployed for either walking or cycling? Most of the cases seem to only be for a PDA without an aerial.

Any advice please on which alternative to pursue?

Thanks,

Thanks revel.

However from looking at pictures on the website you referenced, it did not seem to me that the aerial on a Mio A201 could be deployed inside the bag?

That is what concerns me in a choice between a conventional PDA + bluetooth GPS, and one with a flip up GPS aerial.

Any thoughts anyone?

Splash out the extra on one of these and sell your phone on Ebay to make up the difference. Smile

The flip out aerial on the Mio 207 does not have to be fully open to receive the sat nav signals. I use one Myself with the Fugawi system and maps.
But with personnel use I have had out of the Aquapak it works and it works well.
Choice of vender does rely on you for all your needs becouse there are various sizesto choose from.

The "Aquapac" devices looked great at the recent NEC show, but a couple of problems (I could forsee) were the capability to charge the unit whilst in the bag, yes they do a PDA bag with cable feed through but it was too small for the unit I have, secondly the method of mounting securely to a bike is missing and I wouldn't want a PDA swinging around my neck while out on a bike, they were of great build quality though.

One other case to take a look at is www.otterbox.com the PDA cases they have offer additional protection with a number of connection options.
As to the all in one vs the multiple devices, I have found the all in one is great for a short walk, but will consume the available power faster than a separate GPS and PDA, OK this is both device and software dependent, but two separate devices with there own fully charged batteries will normally out last a single combined unit IMHO.

If you are intending walking/ cycling where the GPS signal could be degraded due to tree cover etc. make sure you specify a unit that is SiRF-III equipped, the increased sensitivity is well worth the extra cost, in fact I would use nothing less than this for walking - Mike

Many thanks to all for their views on this topic.

I have decided to go with the conventional PDA + BT GPS - in this case an iPAQ HX2490 and Globalsat BT338 (with Memory Map).

More expensive than the Mio, but it just seems to me that this set up will be inherently more robust and flexible - I hope that turns out to be true!

Good point about the battery drain - I hadn't thought of that.

Thanks again.
