Street Level maps for USA

Not sure if this is really the right forum, feel free to move if somewhere else is more appropriate.

I will be visiting California this summer and driving in San Francisco, Yosemite, Los Angeles and points in between. I would appreciate some advise as to which maps to use. I already have a BT GPS, iPAQ 2210 and Tom Tom 3 for UK, which all work very well.

I have been looking at OnCourse 5 which seems to have good reviewsr, it also seems to be very reasonably priced, even with shipping from USA.

I would also appreciate any comments from people who have actually used some of the applications.

Thanks for the advice Peter, our intention is to pick up the hire car on our penultimate day in SF for trip to Muir Woods & Napa valley, then down to LA. My post did perhaps make it look like we would be driving around SF.

Did you use GPS & any street level maps? Would love to hear from someone who had.

maps are not so much of an issue as GPS signal quality. SF has lots of high riseers and multi level highways. A SiRF III GPS certainly comes in handy.

I travel regularly to the US and have done for many years as my wife is American.

I bought the USA SD card for my TT GO last year and it was fantastic. Arriving late pm, jet lagged in Seattle, driving the hire car from the airport, one very important thing not to worry about (ie where I'm going)!

It helps if you're already familiar with the voice/display combination so that the occasional misleading direction (eg turn left rather than bear left) can be interpreted correctly.

I've also used it on a trip to Boston, Mass and Maine. I agree with the comments about good sat reception. Boston's road tunnels meant that it was useful to have reviewed the route and highway numbers before setting out as several miles of no satellite reception were possible.

In conclusion, i was amazed by the coverage of the 'peculiar' and incomplete looking US addresses, the TT map had them all. Remember with satnav you are never lost, though sometimes you are not where you want to be :D
