long lat on map and file don't fit

hi when I look at he icon of wal mart on my map (navman I see)
for lonand lat
42 13' 48
83 38'57

when I look at my csv file
I can read this
-83.649273, 42.23020

how it's different

The Navman can indicate Longitude and Latitude in either degrees, minutes, seconds or in decimal format. Don't forget that there are only 60 minutes to a degree, not 100. So 1.5 degrees will be equivalent to 1 degree 30 minutes.

All Longitudes East of the Greenwich Meridian are shown as minus.

Sorry, got East and West confused.

I should have said "All longitudes West of the Greenwich meridian are shown as minus"

Bit of a boring task.

My HP15C calculator has a built-in program for the conversion. You could set up an Excel file. There are on-line programs.

There is no doubt that 42:13:48 converts to 42.230000.

Have you got the cursor on exactly the right place on the map?

The icon does not locate squarely on the location. I suspect that one corner of the icon matches the location, not the centre of the rectangle.
