Hi, this is my first post so bear with me and if I seem a little dumb please accept my apologies.
The problem I am facing is I am not very knowledgeable with computers and in fact only acquired my first one along with the TomTom at Christmas at the age of fifty. All the copying, pasting and the different file names take some absorbing- I have managed to download the zip folder and have extracted the files to a folder on my windows desktop.
I have read and reread the instructions provided for installing the speed safety cameras into the TomTom unit, (my model is the 300) and I think I understand the ov2 bmp file thing. However, I need to know do I install all of these types of ov2 bmp files from the folder named ‘ov2 bmp’, into the GB map folder. And then do I install all the other ov2 bmp files found in the folder called ‘speed zoned’ into the GB map file as well, as when I looked in there I found some more sub folders each with ov2 bmp files contained in each as well. Until I know what I am doing, I am a little frightened of doing anything in case I damage anything. I have backed up everything off the original card as instructed just in case though. Please help

No apologies needed – we were all newbies here once! ;)
The secret is to take your time and not get rushed by anybody.

Good start, that’s correct. Thumbs Up

That’s right, each category (and each speed-zoned subcategory) has two identically named files, one is an .OV2 file (the actual database) and the other is the .BMP file (the icon that appears on the screen).

Both the .OV2 file and its respective .BMP file must be placed in the GB map folder on your TomTom GO.

One consideration is to ensure that if you decide to install the speed-zoned files then you include all files (20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, tba, and var) where appropriate and also that you don’t install the non-speed-zoned database for the same type.

As long as you have a viable backup, you are safe. Once you’ve done it the first time, the subsequent times will be much easier.

Regards,

Thank you Robert ever so much for your welcome, and for your quick response. Also for your style of walking me through my problem, I am very grateful.

I think I now understand things better than I did before I placed the post. So am I right in assuming that you can install the ov2 bmp files from the folder named ‘ov2 bmp’. Alternatively, you can install the ov2 bmp files from the folder named ‘speed zone’ sub folders gatso, mobile and specs. However, you should not install both the files contained in the ‘ov2 bmp’ folder and the files in the 'speed zoned' folders both together.
One final question, if I am right in the above assumptions, and I was to choose just the ‘speed zoned’ files to install in the GB map folder. Then I have noticed that there does not seem to be a red-light warning camera contained in the 'speed zoned' folders, could I then just install the single ov2 bmp files named poketgps_uk_redlight from out of the ‘ov2 bmp’ folder along with the speed zoned ov2 bmp files to complete the group or would that mess things up.

You're learning fast! Laughing
You're ALMOST exactly right.
Where you asked in your last paragraph whether you should add the redlight files from the ov2bmp folder you are dead right, but you missed another one called temp.ov2 (and its bmp). These are temporary Gatsos for roadworks etc. In time these might be integrated into the main catgories, but at the moment they are tagged on as extras with no speed information.
So to summarise, your total list (if you want the full speed-zoned option) will be

pocketgps_uk_gatso_20.ov2
pocketgps_uk_gatso_30.ov2
pocketgps_uk_gatso_40.ov2
pocketgps_uk_gatso_50.ov2
pocketgps_uk_gatso_60.ov2
pocketgps_uk_gatso_70.ov2
pocketgps_uk_gatso_tba.ov2
pocketgps_uk_gatso_var.ov2
pocketgps_uk_mobile_20.ov2
pocketgps_uk_mobile_30.ov2
pocketgps_uk_mobile_40.ov2
pocketgps_uk_mobile_50.ov2
pocketgps_uk_mobile_60.ov2
pocketgps_uk_mobile_70.ov2
pocketgps_uk_mobile_tba.ov2
pocketgps_uk_specs_20.ov2
pocketgps_uk_specs_30.ov2
pocketgps_uk_specs_40.ov2
pocketgps_uk_specs_50.ov2
pocketgps_uk_specs_60.ov2
pocketgps_uk_specs_70.ov2
pocketgps_uk_specs_tba.ov2
pocketgps_uk_redlight.ov2
pocketgps_uk_temp.ov2
(and don't forget their matching .bmp icon files)

One final note; until recently the SPECS cameras were not split up into speed-zoned. Some older versions of the TomTom firmware only allow 27 POI categories (39 normally). So for those people, or if you want to add loads of other stuff as POIs, you can always use the single SPECS file instead, which gives this smaller list:
pocketgps_uk_gatso_20.ov2
pocketgps_uk_gatso_30.ov2
pocketgps_uk_gatso_40.ov2
pocketgps_uk_gatso_50.ov2
pocketgps_uk_gatso_60.ov2
pocketgps_uk_gatso_70.ov2
pocketgps_uk_gatso_tba.ov2
pocketgps_uk_gatso_var.ov2
pocketgps_uk_mobile_20.ov2
pocketgps_uk_mobile_30.ov2
pocketgps_uk_mobile_40.ov2
pocketgps_uk_mobile_50.ov2
pocketgps_uk_mobile_60.ov2
pocketgps_uk_mobile_70.ov2
pocketgps_uk_mobile_tba.ov2
pocketgps_uk_temp.ov2
pocketgps_uk_specs.ov2
pocketgps_uk_redlight.ov2

Go for it! Wink

Thank you ever so much for taking the time to answer my questions you are wonderful people and true Gentlemen. I feel a lot more confident to attempt the installation myself now.
As my learning curve increases and the absorption of all things TomTom builds, I hope to contribute with help and ideas myself one day to this forum as a way of paying this excellent site back.

As a new member and one who thinks, paying for a quality product is not too much to ask. Then if in the future a charge of £2.00 is to be asked for these downloads, then it is a small price to pay for something that could not only save your driving licence but your life as well.

Sorry to trouble you all again but could you please advise me where I may find the file ‘pocketgps_uk_specs_tba.ov2’ that you have listed in the full speed option, as try as I might I cannot locate it in the unzipped December download file.
I have decided to install the full speed-zoned option, along with the red light and temporary cameras. But, the file ‘pocketgps_uk_specs_tba.ov2’ does not appear to be in any of the database folders. Does this matter

Hi eralyn,

That file is the "Known SPECS cameras without a recorded speed limit", however I think that the latest version of the database has every SPECS camera with a recorded speed limit. So the file isn’t needed this month.

Privateer's right. I copied that list from the November download as that was the last one I had on the PC at home (downloaded december's at work).
