Hi,

I would like to buy a system this week and have been looking at the medion system from aldi and the evesham system at makro.

Ive never used one of these things before and have some questions:

1) Which of the two is best?

2) Can the software show off road points i.e. paths round the brecons, rural car parks?

3) Can you load and run os mapping software like memorymap?

4) Can they be meddled with to make them more like a pda and able to run pocket word etc? It says the evesham is also a powerful pda. What does it include?

5) Can you manually input a lat \ long figure or grid ref or is it just a postcode?

Any help greatly appreciated

Roads only, not paths off road.

No

Possibly, too early to tell

You can navigate to Lat Lon (Assuming it is on a road) but PostCodes are 5 Digit only, not the full UK 7 Digits.

To be honest there are better solutions than either the Evesham or Medion units but at extra cost.

Darren,

Thanks very much for your reply.

Even more confused now!

What would be your recomendation for my requirements and at what price?

Need postcode search (is 7 digits a must?????) for town driving but would also really like to be able to use off road and to maybe run memory map for some serious hiking.

Word & outlook would be a definate bonus as well.

Your requirements dictate a PocketPC solution. I'd look for a Mio168 PocketPC with built-in GPS as the base unit.

For software, TomTom, AA Navigator, CoPilot6 all have 7 Digit PostCode (which is a must have in my opinion).

You will be able to install and run Memory-Map on this setup. Obviously it is more expensive (guide price £296 for Mio168 and TomTom) but it is far more capable and can do much more than the Medion/Evesham solutions.

Again i would say that Darren is correct, if you want to be able to get the most out of your PDA/Satnav then get somthing like the Mio 168 with tomtom 5:

http://www.totalpda.com/Mio-168-PDA-GPS-with-TomTom-European-Maps.aspx

You wil not be able to install memory-map software onto a mio 268/269 unit.

Sorry to throw a spanner into the works but what about the Mio A201. After your recomendations, I looked at the 168 but then noticed the A201.

Does anyone have any info on the A201 other than has already been posted??

Basically the A201 is a Mio168 replacement with SiRFStarIII Chipset, Bluetooth, removable battery and Windows Mobile 5.0.

Price and availability is unknown at this point, it is likely to be significantly more expensive at launch than the Mio168 is now but the spec is good.

And a big improvement is the fact that they are using a mini USB connection on the base of the unit. This should resolve issues with the connectors. The Mio 168 has been a great seller for some time now and the fact the replacement will have Bluetooth and SiRF will make it very appealing.

The Evesham unit at Makro does support full 7 digit post code search.

And don't forget those speed camera alerts integrated!

Cheers

The advice above is good advice Darren.

I use TT5 for the road & it is the best software I have used so far & Memory maps for off road riding which allows me to ride in the middle of no where knowing I can get out again without any problems so it will be just as good for walking if not better.

The above software is not cheap so I would not worry too much about getting the new Mio as the 168 works just great as it is & unless you have £££'s to spend I would spend the money on Memorymaps & a 168 until the new Mio comes down in price.

Good Luck
