HI

I am thinking of getting either memory map or Tracklog digital mapping to use with Garmin handheld GPS has anyone used either/both these products? and if so which did they find best?

Memory-Map is a great piece of software. If you haven't already, check out our Topographic reviews. Bear in mind though with Memory-Map and the other products we have reviewed, you do need a Pocket PC also! Probably stating the obvious here, but some people sometimes don't realise this.

Surely I can use it on my desktop pc?...I realise I can't download maps into the handheld GPS...is that what you meant?

Gillie,

I use Memory-Map Navigator on my PC to set up routes for walks and then export them to my Garmin eTrex Legend. The combination works very well and it is far easier to set up routes that way. After the walk I import the track to MMN, again without any problems.

The MMN maps are 1:50,000 scale and normally I would use 1:25,000 scale maps when walking, but for setting up routes I find that the less detailed maps are fine. If you have a requirement for more detailed maps (1:25,000) then have a look at the Anquet website and the Harvey maps. Sorry to add another option to your list

Thanks for the reply

I have looked at the Anquet site but I live in the south (Isle of Wight) and most of my walking is done in the Southern Region and the Harvy maps are the Peaks, Lakes & Highlands I think....

I like the look of the MM software and like the idea of overlaying a arial photograph with the map..I know that is a extra disc but I am such a map freak...and it is my birthday soon!

Another option is Fugawi, MM charges for the O.S. maps are high in my view. I like the Fugawi method where the UK is split into four bands and each one is £50 - that's plain and simple for me.
