I have a quick question, I'm planning to drive to paris and just wanted to know which is the best way to drive there. Is it best to use the toll road or is just as quick to not use them.

many thank

Shrubies.

Hi Shrubies,

I don't know which channel port you will be driving from and so which Autoroute you will be using. However, in general you will find the Autoroutes far quicker than the N and D roads. The Autoroutes tend to be better maintained but have less road-works sections than our Motorways. They are also radially arranged from Paris so trips to/from Paris are particularly direct. Of course you won't see much of France that way so it depends what your priorities are.

Do beware of peak traffic times particularly close to Paris. These are the predictable rush hour times and leaving Paris any time Friday afternoon. Traffic jams are just as likely here as at home and you may or may not make better speed by leaving the Autoroute. Traffic jams (Bouchons) are usually alerted well ahead on the overhead signs so you can use TomTom's Alternative Route features to see if another route appeals.

Navigating around Paris, it is a gamble whether to head for the Peripherique and then pick up the relevant Autoroute out, or head across country to avoid going anywhere near the centre. At quieter times the Perepherique route is simpler and probably faster. At busier times probably go cross-country. Routing that way is not as simple as in used to be with TTN3 using the "Avoid Area" feature. Now you have to use one of the Alernative Route solutions or Itinerary function with one or more waypoints.
