BT338 TomTom5 Hx4700 problem

I have a hx4700 with a BT338 GPS. This all works fine with TomeTom Navigator 3.

Installing TomTom 5 on and I get no GPS signal. There is connectivity between the BT338 and the 4700 though !.

I borrowed a friends Bluetooth GPS reciever and theat works fine (although connection seems to be SPP not COM (??). Either way - clearly the s/w works on the pda, the BT338 works also (TT3)

Any idea why a cheapo BT GPS works whilst a near top of the line one does not with TT5

Help appreciated

This is because TomTom 5 doesn't understand SiRF protocol any more (TTN3 did). Switch your receiver to NMEA and all will be well.

thanks for the reply - but I already tried setting TT5 to NMEA with no avail. In fact I tried all the combinations without success.

SInce my posting I borrowed a friends unbranded GPS receiver. It worked fine - no problems. What is really bothering me is that several people on this forum clearly have TT5 Hx4700 & BT338 and are happy - what is different ?

Do I need to upgrade the ROM (something I have been reluctant to do) or what ?

OK, flipant your answer may be, but actually it makes a whole load of sense: a firends reciever (which is nmea only) works fine, and TT3 pretty well does sirf. mmmmhhh why di TT take out that support.

Anyway, since there is no portal for the reciever - exactly how does one do this for t BT338 ?

I guess it must be possible as the spec for the receiver says nmea - but I just don't see how

Clues ? Software ?

Thought it should be fine. Taken from the spec for the BT338

GPS Output Data NMEA 0183 protocol, and supports command:
GGA(1sec), GSA(1 sec), GSV(5 sec), RMC(1sec)
( VTG and GLL are optional)
GPS transfer rate 38400,N,8,1

gad this is infuriating Sad

Found SirfDemo, but the usb BT dongle on my PC gives it ports of 18 and 22. SirfDemo only allows you serial ports of 1-12. I will try it on my laptop at home later.

Just beware about the sirfdemo port limitation

Don't suppose there is anything useful like an equivalent program for pocketpc ?

Many thanks for all the help - especially Lutz for that not so dumb question. I finally found some software to switch the BT338 mode to NMEA and all is well.

For ref, the software is freeware called "GPSTweak" and can be downloaded from

Just copy the appropriate exe to your PPC and run

Another piece of software is "SirfDemo" which runs from PC

Now why couldn't TomTom have put a means to switch when migrating from TT3 !
