A recent GPS user,
after days of scouring the web, I'm coming to the conclusion that
Garmin seems to want to sell the European maps to American users,
and American maps to European users. Mmmm.
I'm talking about cityselect maps, which I believe are the best
maps that Garmin uses - without third party products.
AFAIK The inbuilt maps as delivered are minimum detail, so I thought
I'd price up the better ones. The only UK outlet I could find only
sold them as part of a bundle, with a car-mount for the C60 series.
That means that Eu users can't get the better maps for their
GPS handhelds.
Does this make sense to anybody please?
I'm totally confused.

No, not really. :x
Garmin's licence system is byzantine at best, I don't think they understand it themselves. The best thing to do is write to them and ask what to do. Let us know what you find out!!

What maps do you have?
What unit do you have?
What maps are you thinking of buying?
I have an eMap and an iQue and cannot understand you problem 
The maps that came with them are down to individual house numbers!
There are many outlets for buying updates [including Garmin themselves in Romsey near Southampton] but you should always check online to see which software is compatible with your unit.
In four years I have not experienced your problems. |

Whether or not it is still the case I can't say, but it certainly used to be that if you were in Europe you couldn't buy the European maps as a stand-alone product, if you were in the States then you couldn't buy those maps as a stand-alone product.

As Strumble says, it depends what product you bought as to what maps come with it.

Sorry, I meant CitySelect and CityNavigator particularly, not R&R (now discontinued, I think) or MetroGuide, although your first link shows CitySelect available for pre-order, so perhaps the times, they are a-changing.

As yet I don't have either a handheld or maps. I'm researching what
others have written.
I'm looking at the 60CS, but without decent maps I may as well
go buy something nearer £100. The 60CS gets good write-ups
but the maps appear not to.
I believe OS maps are a nono with Garmin, so I need something
better than the basemaps, which seem not to get much in
terms of a writeup.

When I spoke to Garmin yesterday on the phone (in relation to this thread), they said that they are hoping to bring out topographical maps sometime before xmas.

Garmin's Topo maps are OK but I wish they would allow us to import our own raster maps (ie OS) and calibrate them.

I found a UK source for the city select at 180 pounds, but that makes a silly
total.
I guess I'm going to wait until Garmin accepts that standards are worth
following.
