And very much appreciated! It's good to see other's willing to jump in and help out with the knowledge they have.

Lucy - Like you I tend to buy far in excess of my needs at the time, though I don't blindly go for the most expensive option.

Usually this allows me to extend the useful life of the item beyond that that would be possible had I bought the minimum sufficient. This is helpful as I tend to be an infrequent upgrader of hardware. I tend to over-specify substantially (but with some degree of measure - on PCs, for example, I tend to specify a more cost-effective processor one or two steps down from the outright maximum available, feeling that the extra price premium for what is only marginally faster is unjustifiable). I tend then to stick with my choice until it's completely outgrown.

With my Pocket PC, I bought right at the top end of what was available at the time (which was the iPAQ 3970), simply because it was my intention to do without a personal laptop. Things have worked out as I hoped.

Despite it being a mid-range machine, the iPAQ 2210/2215 is very powerful and that machine, together with the rather similar in specification Dell Axim X5 400MHz model (which has slightly more usable memory, but lacks built-in Bluetooth) are both extremely popular choices.

I hope you get on well with your 2215. It seems very popular already! Further, it should be well capable of the many things I use my 3970 for.

I appreciate in particular your comment about size. I saw a 1910 'in the flesh' last week and was astonished at its diminuitive size at the side of my 3970. My understanding is that the significantly more exapndable 2210/2215 is not that much larger. One thing that can't be said about my 3970 is that it's small - particularly as it always 'wears' a PC Card Expansion Pack Plus!

Peter - my attempt was only to help, and the comments were aimed (I agree on reflection, very ill-advisedly in a beginner's forum) to those who I have seen considering a switch from the 3950 or 3970 to the 2210 as an upgrade.

I think the 3970 and 2210 are very similar machines, and there's advantages and disadvantages of each. The 2210 is a nice package, not least in terms of physical size as Lucy mentions, but does have less usable RAM and File Store, and this may be important for some. I'd miss the 8MB of RAM for sure.

I never claim to have all the answers, nor do I have a PhD (if only - sadly I feel ill too young to complete my BSc, let alone consider a research degree). It is true, though, that for a while I did manage to work in computer science (R&D role in an networking firm - primarily software though with some hardware work; incidentally one of my jobs was programming in ARM assembly language).

I hope I can show a willingness to learn from others (as I have from you and all the team), and demonstrate a willingness to suggest a wide range of solutions. I certainly attempt not to blindly recommend what I use.

My aim in participating in the forums is to try to do something useful and help others. There's no hidden agenda, nor am I in the pay of any companies in the GPS or Pocket PC markets.

I'm very limited in what I can achieve by what have now become severe disabilities, and even part time work is not possible for medical reasons. I hope I might manage to give something back to others just as so many have helped me. I fear I may not be succeeding after your comment - if so, I apologise.

PeterB,

Think you answered your own question, since this is a beginners forum, and DavidW as all the answers, who better to help those of us with less knowledge.

Thanks Mike. I'd be using it in the car, but I hope to soon get involved in some long distance horseback trail riding too.

David: I struggled between the 2215 and the 5500 series, but I have a bad habit of usually buying more than what I'd ever need in electronic items. I think that stems from my fear of getting something and then outgrowing it. Aside from the GPS usage, I'll primarily use it for business contact information and appointments. I have future intentions of exploring it's use for wireless communication as well. After speaking with a really help HP rep (He certainly could have steered me towards buying the more expensive product, but he didn't.) I decided up the 2215. It's small size was a big factor in my choice too.

Thanks, L

DavidW

Why does a PhD in computer science, with all the answers, get involved in a beginners forum????

Mike,

The 2215 actually has a little less usable memory than the 3800 and 3900 series. Though it has 64MB, only 56MB is available to the user.

Apart from that slight drawback, though, it seems a very capable machine indeed, particularly for the price. As you say, it won't take expansion packs (you need a 3000 or 5000 series iPAQ for that) - but you do have a built in CompactFlash slot which mitigates a lot against that.

I expect the eventual replacement of the 3970 will be the new 5150. It remains to be seen whether HP will make available a 5450 style WLAN card that fits internally or not. I suspect not - even if the hardware would be capable of supporting it, simply for installation reasons - but maybe I'll be proved wrong.

The only one of the new iPAQs that I'd want to swap my 3970 for is a 5550 - but I don't think that's justifiable as things stand. Of all the improvements in the 5550, realistically all I'd use would be integrated WLAN and more memory - but I have a WLAN card for my 3970, and if I organise myself and my SD card better, I'm sure I can continue with 64MB.
