I have used TomTom 5 for 2 weeks and keep finding that my backlight on my PDA keeps dimming. I have already unchecked the 'Turn backlight off when device is not being used' in the backlight settings but TomTom software keeps enabling it. Very frustrating when your lost and looking at the directions and the backlight turns off. Confused

I am running TT5 on my Mio 168 and this happens to me sometimes as well. Lets hope they fix this when they release the upgrade. As you say it can be very annoying.

Same thing happens on my Ipaq 3850, doesn't matter what you set backlight to TomTom changes it to power off, I can then get it to stay on by removing power several times and then it stays on, but wont go off when ignition is turned off. Crying or Very sad

I have just upgraded my Mitac Mio 338 from TT3 to TT5 Navigator and I am having exactly the same problem. TT5 changes my backlight settings and the screen goes dark during a journey. It sometimes locks the PDA up, so I have to do a soft reset whilst switching it on. I thought it my PDA was faulty. Does anybody have a fix or do we wait until TT issue a fix? Sad

It may be your PDA rather than TT5. Go into Settings, backlight, and you should see a box where you can have it switch off the backlight with and without external power. Select external power, and make sure the auto switch off is not enabled

My problem is the opposite.

I want the backlight to turn off after 30 minutes. The Winduhs settings only allow you to set a max of 10 minutes, but a little registry hack fixes that. (User/Control Panel/Backlight/TimeInMilliseconds) However TomTom 5.1 seizes display control and does not allow the backlight to go off.

Ideally I'd like the PDA to shut off when I turn off ignition, but this is not possible, judging from the pinouts on the connector. Second best is if it would shut off after a period, and third best is if I could shut it off manually with the side button of my 4700. (top button is in the shield over the gauges)

If you create a custom menu you can get to a new option called :

backlight preferences

here you have the options to dim the back light, always, on walking and bicycle routes, when not charging, and never.

This thread:
http://www.pocketgpsworld.com/modules.php?name=Forums&file=viewtopic&t=22522 shows you how to create a menu.
The option you want is:

MENUITEM|TASK_SET_BACKLIGHT|

Not sure if this will help you or not... but its worth a try.

Thanks, I'll try that.

But I hear that another way is to be running Media Player and assign one of the buttons to "Display Toggle". I tried setting the side button when it says 'Press button', but the Notes always comes up. The character string is being intercepted before given to Media Player.

HowTF do you deassign that side button in Winduhs? The only thing I can find in Settings is "Power Buttons", and that only has a list of actions without button designations.

Also, can anyone recommend a CPU monitor? Sometimes my 4700 starts running hot (likely a TomTom bug), so I'd like a % graph and the ability to look at processes with %CPU they consume.

And can anyone recommend a Bluetooth sniffer, to do surveys?

Start, Settings, Buttons, <none>

Try Pocket hack master at :
http://www.antontomov.com/products/ for CPU monitoring. Download the trial and see if its what your looking for. Although this tool is used primarily to change the clock speed up or down.

I have no idea of a blue tooth sniffer. Sorry. But let me know if you find one.

Do a Google for 'bluetooth + sniffer' and you'll find loads.

My 4700 does exactly the same, its a known problem, and when you put a monitor on it probably won't give an accurate reading as the TT5 will be sapping 100% of the CPU, so nothing left for the monitor software to utilise. I put up with it, but it could be a problem for the unit on a hot day (not something we get too often in the UK) combined with a long duration trip say North Scotland - Mike
