I have a question for you,Dave.

I'll buy the software+Italy map CD and the complete europe maps CD.

Will I need to activate every map I install or will I only need to activate the software?

Thank You,

Max

Jon, are you saying that it will automatically allow you to install to a new device every 7 days ? Like a clock counting ?

I agree, Post Code routing is a disappointment. The way we work here at Pocket GPS as the team as a whole review the products as they come in and not an individual as this gives us consistency on the reviews, and we also pick up on other items that one person may have left out. Unfortunately we're still waiting for extra activation codes. We were going to do a full out review, but as I only have one activation code, we've gone for an initial preview first.

It appears to work using HTTP port 80 I locked my firewall down pretty tightly and didn't see it pass through so I'm assuming it's running a Port 80 or something similar which is allowed through my firewall.

Jon, the TTCode website does say you can get another code, but you have to contact TomTom to receive it. Their website states "You can not get a new activation code for another 3 days." I presume that's IN another 3 days and not FOR another 3 days though.

It's still a real pain that you have to go through this process though.

I have been using an evaluation copy of TT2, so here's the facts:

You can install TT2 on the same device as many times as you like. If you want to install it on subsequent device you can, but you'll have to wait 6 days to get a new activation code.

Have a look at www.ttcode.com for more info

Thanks Nigel. You could backup the Pocket PC though. I tend to do this on a regular basis just in case, that way I don't have to re-install all the applications I have, and in theory I think this would save a re-activation.

Hi Dave,

I must complement you on the speed of your response -many thanks. Your comment does give some reason for optimism particularly with a PDA as a flat battery can cause lose of data and my memory isn't all it once was!!

Regards

I think you'll find you can load it as many times as you like to the same device, but not to a different device.

I do hate activation myself, so you're not alone here.

Hi Dave,

Even Microsoft allow you several attempts to load and a 30 day period of grace when you update to Windows XP before you formally activate the product.

It seems strange therefore to demand activation before installing. What happens if the install goes wrong!? I suppose it means another weary wait for a new code.

Odd to say the least.

TomTom Navigator 2 now incorporates an Internet Activation Process which requires your PC to be connected to the Internet whilst installing. This will then activate TomTom Navigator 2 to that specific Pocket PC using a Device ID and will not allow you then to install it to another Pocket PC.

TomTom's license agreement does say that you can only install it onto one device at anyone time, which suggests if you have your device replaced or you upgrade it then you will need to contact TomTom for a new activation code. This activation is similar to the one that Navman are using, but Navman do allow for 3 activations before they lock you out.

I think this will create a problem going forward on upgrading devices, but I guess we'll have to see how it works out.

Updates for the program won't be an issue as that will continue from their website, map issues would have to be addressed via CD and would probably involve sending CD's back and waiting for the replacement CD to be sent to you.

The Activation is held within the registry (or partly), so I don't think it will cause any problems, it will recognise the registration you have and know it's registered/activated.

Here's a thought on alleviating some of the activation issues.

A company called Sprite produce a brilliant prog for pocket pc's called Pocket Backup Plus. It's worth the asking price of $29.99 just for its basic raison d'etre of providing a simple, reliable means of backing up your ppc so that you can restore it to its former glory following some disaster which has resulted in a Hard Reset. It occured to me that it might also be useful in overcoming some of the pain in the a*se problems with activation.

Before installing TTN2 on my already working Jornada with TTN1 installed, I did a backup. I then installed TTN2, activating it in the process. Having had a play with it and setup Checkpoint 1.8 (btw a great FREE, simple prog), I did a further backup and then (asking for trouble, this!) did a Hard Reset. I then restored this, latest backup to the PPC and held my breath.....

just as with my past experience, it work flawlessly. No request for reactivation, no problems.

And just for those of you who are wondering, I disonnected the internet connection for the period of the backup, so no chance of the software connecting to TT's server.

This may save some of you some grief.

Some might be wondering whether they can use this to put the prog on more than one device. Whilst it is possible to create clone PPCs of identical model, TTN2 would not be likely to work on the second device as the software refers to the device ID. It would, however, be possible to activate a second device after the 7 day period safe in the knowledge that both devices can be recovered following a hard reset. (My theory being that if you activate a second device after seven days, then your original activation code will be removed from the server - anyone confirm this? I doubt that TT will allow more than one device at any time).

I'm not advocating breaking the licence here, but in my particular case I feel justified as my wife has a GPS receiver, but I do not (no use for it in my job!). She relies on me to provide her with working tools that she can use without being an IT specialist! TT's products have been flaky to say the least, so I have installed it to trial on my PPC and then, when I'm happy on hers. I could do that using the 7 day changeover, but then I would be unable to check any patches/updates if I had to Hard Reset my device in the meantime.

Phew - gone on a bit here I'm afraid, but hopefully it will be of interest to someone.

ottopop,

Just the France CD, but it seems the maps themselves need activation even if you already have an activated TTN2 program and GB maps installed.

Mark,

have you bought the Complete CD of European Maps or have you just bought the France CD?

I ask you this because I thought that the European Maps were not to be activated...

Anyone had problems (or success) in activating a second country?

I successfully activated GB and a few days later am attempting to install France maps on a second SD card using the same PC and card reader. The installation program refused to accept the code from the France disc reporting it as "incorrect" but would accept the code from the original GB disc allowing me to get the maps onto the card.

However on attempting to use the card I am required to manually activate again. The activation website again refuses to accept the code from the France disc - incorrect code - and although it will accept the GB code and provides a second code to enter in the PPC, this doesn't activate the French maps - the program won't run with the France SD card in and if you run it up with the GB map and attempt to switch to the France map it puts you back into the unsuccessful manual activation cycle.

Is it the product code that is faulty or is there some flaw in the activation process for second countries? Any ideas?

Mark
