First question - you are trying to get the signal while outside, not from inside your house or anything?? The unit needs a direct view of the sky in order to get a satellite fix.

If so, the only thing I can suggest is trying to re-install the GPS. To do this, hit the menu button a couple of times until the 'GPS status' button is on your screen. Select that, and then click on 'GPS settings'. Then hit the 'Find GPS' button. It'll take a few seconds, and then hit 'Set GPS'. The settings on my unit are COM port - COM2, Baud rate - 4800, Protocol - NMEA.

I hope this helps.

If that does not work you may want to try a 'Hard Reset' on the unit.
You will find a small switch on the back of the unit marked 'on - off'. Using the stylus slide the switch accross to the 'off' position. Leave it a minute and then switch back on. The Destinator software will re-install.

The most common reason for not picking up a signal is just not being in good sight line of the sky. Make sure you try it outside and not right next to a building to get the best signal possible.

My unit normally picks up a strong signal within 2 minutes but depending on your location and weather conditions it may take longer.

Itchy..

Many people are disappointed with GPS at first because when you first start it up it can take a long time to get a proper lock. My TomTom BT unit took about an hour before it got a solid lock, but from there it's been great.

Make sure it has a full view of the sky, preferably outside, and leave it running for an hour. Then see if it has managed to get a fix. Once it's done that it should be easier next time.

If you find that because of the position the unit is mounted in your car or because of something like a heated windscreen you cannot get a good signal you should think about getting an external antenna.

www.lowestonweb.com has one under the Sat Nav accessories section for just £24.99
