Have just installed TT5, which arrived this afternoon. Installation completely painless (thanks to reading in this forum of the need to create an empty tomtom folder on the SD card, 7 digit postcode worked first time!) First impression is that the scrolling is MUCH smoother than TT3. Nothing to do with the SD card - I'm using the one which had TT3 on it.
A pity you can't change speed preferences, but no doubt before long someone will come up with a hack to enable us to do so - they have already cracked how to change the menu order!
Really pleased with the landscape view - the information on the data bar is much clearer and the current speed (which others have criticised in portrait view for being too small) is actually larger than in TT3.
I have given it a short 5 mile test run, looking forward to a longer trip.
Now I need to read the manual to get the best out of it
Robin :D

Ditto!

I'd echo everything Robin2 has said.

I'm very pleased with the upgrade - it's great.

Sorry, I have to disagree,

This upgrade feels like a step backwards,

There seams to be a complete lack of options, I like choices!

Have had problems with the comunications,

Lots of features missing,

And MAPs that don't appear to have been updated, even if they are 80Mb bigger,

TTN3 8/10
TTN5 2/10

Navicore? Worth a try now,

Carl,

My first impression is that I'm very, VERY impressed :D

I was upset at TomTom due to their reverse-order-to-delivery policy

I received TT5 the same day as I planned to go out in Europe so after the 3 hours of installation I had to go without testing, learning, etc.
I'm going back home now, but I have been traveling through
Sweden-Denmark-Germany-Switzerland-Italy-Austria
and now going back home

So what has impressed me so far?

1. Both of the map errors that I have been reported to TeleAtlas has been corrected

2. The maps has been as close to 100% correct as I believe one can expect.

3. The voice prompts is working like magic, clear, in time, precise
This part has maybe impressed me the most

4. The POI I have been using is, if not perfect, but very good

5. That the European maps was included in the upgrade

So is everything perfect?

No, but even with the faults it is a no-brainer to go for the upgrade

Faults that I found (and as I see now, also have been reported at other entries in this forum

1. Starting TT takes a long time
2. Increased the number of Soft resets
I can't say it's due to TT but I have to soft reset a lot more now then before installing TT5. I close TT5 and all other programs before powering it off in the evening. But when restarting the OS and/or TT5 the next day seems to hang the device
3. Some, very few, map errors like missing roundabouts
I do not consider this a a fault, it's impossible to get all correct
4. Twice, the voice instaructions did not match the map instruction
a) The voice said "Make a u-turn", but the map indicated to go straight on. I was obvoius that the voice was wrong so it didn't create a problem
but was kind of strange
b) Neither the voice prompt or the map was clear enough in one case , so I made the wrongt choice of road. This could also have been my fault
5. No POI in the Italian standard map. It has a POI file of 8 bytes
And of cause with this size it doesn't show any POI for Italy at all
I will check if it's different on the PLUS map when I get back home
6. I miss changing the safty speed
7. A quick way of "memorize position"
Handy if you pass something that you want to keep for whatever reason. I haven't been able to find a way of doing this anyway
8. The Swedish keyboard layout is not available always
In Sweden, Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Denmark we have characters like å,ä,ö and more and when trying "Navigate to:" these are not available in the keyboard layout.

The bottom line is, this is one of my best upgrades ever

I was especially glad that I was assisted by TT5 in Italy
Without it, I would most likely still be in Italy trying to find a way out :D

Interesting. When you get home and read these threads you will find

5. There are POIs on the Italian Plus map
6. You can change the safety speed (just disable the map view and go through the nested menus)
7. You can memorise position (add favourite>GPS position)

Glad it was pretty painless during your trip. Since writing the original post, I have been very disappointed that you can't run a trial itinerary unless you are connected to a GPS receiver -with TT3 I planned a lot of journeys at home. The Advanced planning works, but you can only have one waypoint and you can't save a route when you are satisfied with it.

TomTom tell me that you can't do this in TT5, but Lutz believes it is a bug and has included it in his list

There is another bug. Sometimes you get an instruction "Turn right, then turn left" even if the left turn is not the first turning to the left. Being used to TT3, which never did this, I have nearly turned too soon a couple of times, but the dislpay showed that I had not reached the turning.

Hope some of these are fixed with patches before too long

Robin

Thanx for the update Robin

I managed in Italy without POI's but pitty I misssed it. Glad I can add it later
They have hidden the Safty speed settings well, compared to TT3
but thanxs to you I can now pass Germany and still see POI, street names, etc, the safty screen is useful but I want to control it

I see your point with planning without a GPS Signal but for my purposes the Advanced planning has been sufficient

Another useful feature that I forgot to mention is the ability to configure
how routes are planned

Since I'm on vaccation and want to aviod the motorways
I have set it to "Ask when I plan"

So for the most parts of Europe I have set it to "Avoid toll roads"
which have enabled us to see parts of the landscape that we couldn't have managed by using paper maps.

Very useful especially in Italy and Austria

I'm also sure that coming patches will solve most issues
your hint about memorize position is good but i hope that I later on can assign a key that could do it more quickly

My first impressions of TT5 aren't negative, but it could have been better.
A lot better.
I only went for the upgrade because the maps of europe were included.
I'm going to France in 4 weeks, otherwise I think I would have waited for
Ver 5.10 or 5.20 .............. won't be long now ......... hopefully ??

I really like the landscape mode, but I really, really miss my checkpoint.
The poi warner is a bit of a poor attempt.
I'm sure that the bugs will soon be sorted.
That's a subtle hint for any TT employees reading these forums Wink

Let you know how France goes

Stuart

My first impressions have been positive too, although I have noticed the following problems (seems like a long list, but I'm still fairly happy with it!):-

* Screen locked up once but continued to give directions (in the first 3 minutes of using it!)
* There's no indicator to let you know that you are on battery power anymore (TT3 has a flashing icon)
* I don't like having to confirm a route by pressing a button, TT3 wasn't like this, it displayed the route and then automatically went to navigator view. This means that I can't plan a route offline and start driving (well I can but it means having to press a button on the screen). Unless I've missed an option somewhere??
* I visited Birmingham city centre earier this year and had big problems with the TT3 maps..... these are still there, in fact I cannot see any improvements over the maps that came with TomTom mobile last year.
* Last week it spoke an instruction 5 miles too early!!! It told me to turn left even though there was other left turns before the actual one.

I would go a long with this review, overall I really like the new TT5. As a navigation tool it is very cool and the instructions are very clear and always seem to be timed perfectly, as they vary with speed.
I used to use Destinator which always gives 500 and 200yard warnings which can become very annoying around towns.

The only thing that I am dissappointed with is the POI libary. Alot of the orginal TT5 POI categories have no POI's in them and the others don't contain many POI's. My main gripe is not being able to look at the POI first. The descriptions aren't very detailed and once you press a POI it automatically routes to it.
Maybe I'm being over critical as Destinator had an excellent POI library with loads of detail ie Name, address and telephone number for each POI and allows you to see where it is 1st before routing to it.

I have tried dowloading other POI's to TT5 which it does ok. But what concerns me is when I downloaded the speed camera database when I done a demo of a what it was very slow and jerky. Which to me indicates the program is struggling so I was concerned about how it would recalculate a route, so I removed it.
