I wonder if this new policy of the maps being only located on the SD card is to do with piracy ?

If the SD card is "registered" to your TT300 you can copy it to a PC for backup purposes but I wonder if your backup would work on another persons TT300 ?

The Maps on CD were able to be copied and activated in the case of V314 & V390. I feel sure Tom Tom will want to prevent this with the new maps.

I suspect the same will apply when people get the upgrade maps for the TTG Classic.

Anyone able to test this wild theory ?

Your go is activated for a major map release co-inciding with the software release. If you are activated for GB Maps then any SD containing GB maps can be used in your GO.

TomTom changed the way activation worked slightly between versions 4 and 5. For version 4 the activation info is stored on the SD card. In Version 5 the activation is stored on the GO itself.

This should mean that you dont need to reactivate when you change your SD card.

I dont think this will have any effect on the "minor" upgrades. Which may not actually cantain any mapping changes at all BTW. The minor upgrades are part of the V5 product release.

Sorry for appearing a bit thick - but you can explain in layman terms exactly what I should do regarding making a back for my TTG 300.

Being a beginner to this system I have absoloutely no idea what I should be doing.

Sorry to sound thick, but not clever with comps etc etc

Here's hoping someone can help

The info on the SD card that came with your 300 is your only copy. Back it up now!

Plug in the Go to your PC with the USB cable. Turn on GO.

Create a new folder on the PC, call it what you want.

Go to "my Computer" and open the removable drive. This is the GO.

Select contents of window of GO/removable drive. Drag to you new folder.

Wait for blue flashing symbol on Go to stop. Could take 10 mins or so.

Eject Go/removable drive (right click on removable drive in "my Computer").

Disconnect.

Have you coped the contents of the SD card or moved the contents from the SD card to your PC?

It sounds like you may have done the latter and now there is nothing on the card!

Yes, simply reverse the process - but use COPY rather than MOVE.

Did you do a full backup or did you use the backup/restore from the setup program? You should have done a full backup by copying all the contents from the SD card to a folder on your PC.

The backup/restore only does your personal settings files.

I bought the TTG 300 last week and so far am extremely impressed with it.

I made a copy of the entire SD card onto my PC and then copied all the files to another SD card which also works perfectly in the TTG. From what I have read I believe I could give a copy of the SD card to another TTG 300 user (I have friends that do not use computers !) with the speed camera POIs loaded.

I have also managed to put the speed camera POIs on the TTG after a few teething problems. I am now running TTG 300 and my Origin B2 in my car but can see myself putting the Origin B2 on ebay in the near future.

Do you think YOUR original SDcard will work on other TTG300? I doubted.

Indeed you could but they would need to re-activate the maps as the activation key would not match their device code. This is easily done but they need their activation key card and access to the Internet to get the unlock code.

Not giving end users a CD would make support easier. Replacing a faulty SD card require zero skill and a minutes effort. Providing telephone support to naive computer users is an expensive, skilled and time consuming job

Apologies if this is not the appropriate place, being a newbie to this forum I haven't yet explored all the options..

I have just today obtained a UK TT300 and was under the impression from the TT website that I could buy an upgrade CD with additional maps which are essential as I spend time 50/50 UK and France. There is no informationa about buying additional individual maps as such on the web site (no prices etc). None of the UK sellers can help - they just send you to the website which has no facility for UK purchasers to buy on line!!

The website says that an upgrade is available to "All owners of a TomTom GO with a valid product code." and "The upgrade price for the Maps of Western Europe is 59 EUR inc. VAT (excluding shipping and handling) for a complete upgrade of software and maps. This CD set will contain the application and the maps of 17 European countries."

This was confirmed on the phone by the people I spoke to at globalpositioningsystems.co.uk. However having registered on their website etc when I enter my product code I get a message that it is "not a valid TomTom Product code."

The vendors gave me a "customer service" number which is the usual non- responding answering machine. I need to get a map for France very quickly. Any ideas on how I can get and install one?

Regards
Steve Last
