hi,

a local seller is selling a four month old tomtom go to me for £275.

a new tomtom 300 costs £370.

is it therefore still ok to buy a tomtom go? there is a big price difference in the two. i need it to navigate local routes and tell me speed camera alerts with some poi's coming in handy.

is the tomtom 300 way better than the go version? is the go still able to do its job properly?

any help would be great.

thanks,

No, the 300 is not better. The "classic" has ASN, the 300 has bluetooth for a possible online connection via your mobile to purchase TomTomplus services. ASN might help keeping your track when you loose satellite connection for some seconds (tunnel, bridge). I have read that this (old) feature works much better with the new 5.1 firmware than with the original 4.x that was part of the first series. Updating this firmware should be painless and is free.

Just make sure you get the entire package: GO, accessories, CDs, activation codes, in case it is not a stocked one but a used one. No codes, no operation, no updates.

The maps included are the 2004 edition, the GO 300 is shipped with the 2005 edition map(s). Read the forum and you will see that this does not make that much difference at all.

Also, the package should include a mains power supply, which no longer ships with the new 300. Makes this an even better bargain!

If you don't plan to spend money on added-value services via the BT/cellphone connection, the original TTG is the better choice of the two.

The main difference will be the map version, but if you have a look round the webboards, the latest version as shipped on the 300 is not being well received - most GB map errors are still there!

thanks for the replies.

the seller has told me he has no cds or ac power cable and taking your advice i have backed out of purchase.

i will now look at ebay to see if i can grab a bargain on the 'go' version.

the 'go' is going for around £300 and dixons do the '300' for £345.

judging by what is posted above is it wiser to then purchase the 'go' model?

thanks,

The GO is fine if you want to navigate. You only need the 300 if you have to have the weather and traffic reports via your mobile phone.

Beware of used items from ebay. Unless you get everything described above you will have nothing Crying or Very sad

The boxed and sealed £300 unit seems good.

Full List:

The GO itself.
The SD card with the GB map and system.
Car Charger/Transformer lead (5v output).
Mains charger.
USB cable.
Windscreen mounting bracket.
TomTomCD with the system and maps (already on the SD card) - also the Major roads or Europe map which you can copy over to a bigger card.
MOST IMPORTANT: The CD paper sleeve which has the Product Code on it - without which you will not be able to upgrade, get repairs, replacements or support!! Or recover from a crash. Or upgrade to a bigger SD card.

Also
Carry case
Cleaning cloth
Possibly a registration card with a code (NOT the essential product code) for getting a coloured fascia or something.

Anything I've forgotten??
