Hi all, been lurking these interesting forums for a couple of months but now I need some help!

My old TomTom GPS packed up a week or so ago so I've had to replace it. I came across one of those BT-77 receivers on eBay at £50 so of course snatched the guys hand off, but seem to be having a a calibration problem with it.

From what I've read on these forums, other people also have been having a similar problem with it being a hundred or so yards out, so when travelling NS, you're either ahead or behind it, and EW, you're in a different street (or a lake in my case!!).

None of the threads I've read seem to have a solution that works for me. I've checked the map datum and it's correctly set to WGS84. I'm hoping it's not a faulty unit as to return it & get a replacement involves extra postage for me (and I'm a cheapskate! The original TT3 GPS was a present!). Is there anywhere I can set an offset on the maps so it reads correctly? If not, any other software that's as good as TT3? (preferably with a working demo so I can check the accuracy!!!).

The programming utility that comes with the GPS doesn't seem to allow me to set an offset, but I can set it to lots of different map datums, any others worth trying?

Forgot to mention... TT3 is updated to 3.07, and clicking the "Reset GPS to this location" doesn't seemt to do diddle Sad

Any help out there?

Is there any function like snapping or a datum point you can set it to ?

Other gps devices I'm told use such things !

Not sure what you mean there (I'm a GPS noob really.. Only had the TomTom a few weeks before it died.. Not a new one you see). I would have thought the option in TomTom to "Reset GPS to this location", should set a datum point for the current GPS location, but doesn't actually seem to work as I think it should... Maybe I should bully my brother into looking for the manual! :D

The TomTom software itself doesn't seem to have any road snapping feature that I can see. The programming utility for the BT-77 has lots of options, including allowing be to send an NMEA code to it but I don't recall seeing something like you mention. I don't really know what I'm doing with that app so only really tried it to see if the GPS works, and to check is was set to WGS84....

Nobody have any possibilities I can try? If not I'll need to contact the seller very soon to arrange returning it... Sad

Well, for anyone that's interested, I now have a solution for this problem.

I posted the same question over on the GPSPassion forums, and gpspassion himself suggested I try doing a factory reset. That worked PERFECTLY!

I now have a cheap as chips GPS receiver with a dead accurate alignment Smile TomTom is now back to as it's meant to be!

Might want to add a sticky on the BT-77 seeing as so many are being sold on eBay these days... Make sure it's set to WGS84 and do a factory reset! :D

On the CD that comes with it there's a utility that you run on your PC (will require a PC bluetooth dongle). You can set the map datum with that, though it defaults to WGS84 anyway. It's also with this utility that you do the factory reset.

Don't know of any PDA tools that can do this too, if you don't have a bluetooth dongle for your PC it might be a little difficult... Maybe some of the more experienced members here know of a PDA/Smartphone utiltity that can send map datums & factory resets to these Nemerix chipped receivers?

Thanks for your reply, I've already got a bluetooth dongle for my pc, got it to connect my mobile phone to the pc. Hopefully I wont have any problems, but if I do at least I'll know how to sort it out now. :D :D

Hi floatingfatman,
When you did your factory reset what were your settings i.e what bps, nmea and when you hit the factory reset tab do you have to wait for a message?

Cheers Jim.

Whereabouts are you? If the roads are not far apart then TomTom is likely to get confused - I find that if I drive along a dual carriageway/motorway and miss a sliproad, I will get instructions for the roundabout I have missed - it takes a while for TomTom to twig I haven't turned off, as it assumes which road to snap to.

If you can borrow another GPS receiver, or find a location for which you know the exact co-ordinates, then it would be worth going into the GPS screen and seeing what location your PDA thinks it is at, for comparison.
