In my home town (Swansea) we have an abundance of Gatsos, but a week or so ago a new type of camera appeared. It appears to be a stainless steel cylinder, about 18 inches long and 6 inches diameter, standing on a square section grey plinth. There are no lines on the road. When driving towards the lens end of the device it appears to be emitting a light. I haven't seen anything like it before - is it a new type of speed camera?

Any chance of a photo next time you pass it? Your description doesn't sound like anything I know about.

I'll see what I can do. It's not easy to stop anywhere on that road, but I'll take a side turning and walk back

Cheers Robin, I though I knew all the speed enforcement cameras but that's either a new one or possibly not a speed camera at all.

Is it high enough possibly to be sensor used to monitor bus movements?

Hi Robin,

Have you checked out Steven Warren’s excellent website, UK SpeedTrap Guide? If you click on "General" and then "ID that roadside device", you’ll see a few different cameras.

Is it like this one?

Regards,

The M&SWSCP website lists all known locations of safety cameras. See if they list the location where you spotted the device.

No - the cylinder is horizontal and much narrower than the picture in your link

Is this device within the vicinity of a railway bridge ?

Network Rail have fitted a number of bridges were they have problems with high vehicles striking them with warning signs which are activated if a high sided vehicle, above the preset height, passes through the beam.

The monitors are set some distance away from the bridge and in some cases are of a cylindrical tube type.

Alan asked

No!

Also, icsys gave a web site which listed many of the cameras in Swansea, but it was only correct up to February. This device has only been there for a couple of weeks.

I'm away in London for the next couple of days. I'll try to get a photo over the weekend

In Sweden we have devices like that which measures pollution. They are generally aimed towards a reflex about 100 meters away. Sounds like it can be one of those. They are emitting a bright light too.

I now have a photo of the "camera". If Darren (or anyone else) would PM me their email address, I'll send it as a jpg email attachment (compressed to about 100kb)

Here is the photo Robin sent:

As Lobo suggested, it is indeed an air quality monitor, see the manufacturer Opsis's website here
