I see that Garmin are now making routable basemaps available for download as part of their iQue software updates. You can get the Americas or Worldwide basemaps from their software updates page. The Americas basemap is 12.5 Meg and Worldwide is 31 Meg.
The basemaps are routable too which makes Garmin's worldmap product somewhat obsolete. :D
I managed to get Mapsource to display the basemap but haven't tried to upload one yet.

Click on the basemaps link
Download the program and unzip it
Look for the .img file
Hack Mapsource or use GPSMapEdit to to display the img file

| How can this be more detailed than Garmin World Map? This is 31 MB and the World Map is 600 MB. |

The 'detail' on the basemaps is very poor!
Below a scale of 3miles it sends message of 'overzoomed'. The roads are a series of straight lines joined together. Towns have only the major roads marked. As it is 'free' do not expect much!!!! We have to buy/unlock CitySelect at $110 each update. |
