Hi

This maybe a dumb question but excuse me, I'm new to this and learning fast on this excellent forum.

I'm about to upgrade my ipaq 3850 PPC to a ipaq 2210 and plan to buy a navman device. My question is what are the pros and cons of the various versions? I see that the 4400 is available at about half the price of the 4420. Do they come with different versions of Smart ST? I'd like to use the speed camera info form this site, does that influence which I go for?

Are there any other aspects I should consider?

Thanks

4100 = Receiver only
4400 = SmartST V1
4410 = SmartST V2
4420 = SmartST V3

To use the $afety camera database you need either V3 or a 3rd party application like GPS Gate which allows sharing of the GPS data. Currently the V3 software will only allow one warning sound for all Custom POIs so you won't be able to make use of the individual .wav warning files.

Other than that, nothing in particular to look out for, in my opinion.

Thanks for the reply Tim.

Incidentally if one took the GPS Gate route are you aware of any stand-alone POI alerting software. Most of the stuff I've seen so far appears to be associated with Tom Tom.

My reason for going with Navman is to be able to ustilse some Memopry Map maps I have, 2003 sadly, not 2004 files so I dont think they will handle POI alerts.

I was also wondering whether the ipaq 2210 has sufficient memory to manage the 4200? I think I read somewhere it might keep locking up. Any 2210 users able to comment?

the iPAQ2210 can manage version 3 no problem.
I use v3 with the BT receiver (all packages use the same receiver, only the software version is different) and have no locking-up problems or BT dropouts which other users have reported.

If you decide to go for v3 I would suggest using Compact Flash for map storage and not Secure Digital.

Well, for some users maybe, but not for all of us. Due to the heavy memory usage in SmartST V3 and the implementation of the memory manager in Windows Mobile 2003 the SmartST application closes down very easily when you switch to another app during your navigation session. This is despite the fact that the amount of free program memory should be more than enough for starting the 2nd application. Navman and HP are aware of this problem and are working on a solution. The funny thing is only that this problem doesn't happen to all 2210 users...
