Now the 'managed motorway' works are finishing, several of the average speed cameras have been decommissioned.

But there seems to be a Hadecs camera on almost every gantry.

As far as I know, they are variable speed point (not average speed) cameras.

If I'm on a motorway for the next x miles, I would like a unit that switches its display off until, say, 3 miles before I need to know anything rather than being on continuously.

Check that as well as choosing British National Grid as the coordinate format, you have also selected the OSGB (or similar named) datum, not WGS84.

Well, you could put an Android smartphone in an Aquapac, run Memory-map UK charts and there are several Tide Times apps available. Total cost about 170.
