i do like the spot right in centre but it dont look good with vent missing & being so metaly/bulky, Brodit mount does look neat & discreat...

No, no. Just buy a cigarette lighter extension cable, cut the plug off and wire it into an accessory fused supply.

As above, it should be wired into a switched 12v feed, normally at the fuse-box ...
