But there's always the CamerAlert App. instead isn't there?

Yes you are quite correct. I have used Camera Alert in the past. Its good as a stand alone app if you are not using mapping software.

I did not go looking for the map update. It was just there as an available update when I clicked on update. So I downloaded all available updates.

I like the look of this device as it can track the route you make. But it is not clear if the device allows you to download a track/route to the device for you to follow.
