Which TomTom?
Is it using an SD card?

Could be the internal memory failing.
This happened to my Go720 so I have run it happily off an sd card for years. But Home refuses to recognise the device, ...

I had about 13 voices on and i've deleted all but 2, now when i go out later to work i'll see if it's cured it, it was so slow last night that it was moving in stages or like block motion.
