Has the x40 range dropped the Jukebox application? On the x20 you can put any .mp3 files in a folder 'mp3' on the SD Card and it works just fine.

hmm well road closures aren't traffic problems as far as hd traffic is concerned. It doesn't seem to pick up that no cars are actually driving through a certain road because its closed.

Hmmm. Sitting in my office near Oxford, my 540 is reporting traffic from the South Coast to as far North as Newark. There is nothing North of that, in Liverpool, Manchester, Glasgow or Edinburgh.

In a word - No.

I have used TomTom devices for a couple of years, and now have a 540. I have never experienced the sort of lag you talked about.
